SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds never had much of a chance at matching history.

Bonds stayed at 69 home runs and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 Sunday on Bubba Trammell's seventh-inning solo shot.

Needing one homer to tie Mark McGwire's single-season record, Bonds grounded out, walked twice and was hit by a pitch from reliever Jose Nunez.

The Giants have six games remaining, including three at homer-friendly Enron Field as the Giants head to Houston on Tuesday night.

San Diego's Rickey Henderson went 0-for-4. He still needs one more run to reach 2,245, matching Ty Cobb's 73-year-old record, and is three shy of his 3,000th career hit.

San Francisco stayed two games behind Arizona in the NL West.

Brian Tollberg (9-4) got the win and Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 42nd save in 45 chances.

CUBS 7, ASTROS 6

CHICAGO -- Ricky Gutierrez hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as Chicago rallied to beat Houston and send the skidding Astros to their third straight loss.

Houston's lead over St. Louis in the NL Central was reduced to one game, the Astros' smallest advantage since Aug. 18.

The Cubs, who overcame a 6-3 deficit in the seventh, are five games behind the Cardinals for the wild card with six games left.

Scott Chiasson (1-1) got his first major league win with one-third of an inning.

METS 9, BRAVES 6

ATLANTA -- Edgardo Alfonzo homered twice and sparked a five-run outburst in the eighth inning for New York, which held on to beat Atlanta.

Mike Piazza had four hits, including his 36th home run, as New York climbed within four games of the Braves in the NL East with six games remaining.

Kevin Appier (10-10) was the winner and Armando Benitez got his 43rd save. Kevin Millwood (6-7) took the loss.

DODGERS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1

Arizona's Albie Lopez avoided becoming the majors' first 20-game loser in 21 years when the Diamondbacks scored in the eighth inning to tie it.

Chan Ho Park (15-11) picked up the win after allowing six hits, two walks and a wild pitch in eight innings, striking out two.

Jeff Shaw pitched the ninth for his 40th save in 49 chances. It was his 200th career save.

MARLINS 8, PHILLIES 3

MIAMI -- Josh Beckett earned his second career win and prevented Philadelphia from closing ground on Atlanta in the NL East.

The Phillies remained two games behind the Braves heading into their three-game showdown in Atlanta starting Tuesday.

Bobby Abreu hit two home runs for the Phillies, giving him 30 for the year.

Beckett (2-1) allowed one run and three hits in six innings of his third career start.

Derrek Lee hit a three-run homer against David Coggin (5-7) to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning.

ROCKIES 10, BREWERS 0

DENVER -- John Thomson pitched Colorado's second complete-game shutout at Coors Field this year and also had three hits, leading the Rockies over Milwaukee.

Thomson (3-5) gave up five hits and struck out a season-high nine in his second career shutout. Mike Hampton shut out the New York Mets at Coors in May.

A career .174 hitter coming in, Thomson had two hits -- including his first triple in 139 major league at-bats -- during an eight-run third inning. He drove in a run as the Rockies completed a three-game sweep.

Jeff D'Amico (2-3) was tagged for eight runs in three innings in his shortest start since coming off the 60-day disabled list on Sept. 1.

REDS 5, EXPOS 4

CINCINNATI -- Dmitri Young and Adam Dunn hit eighth-inning homers off Joey Eischen as Cincinnati forestalled a record-setting home loss and rallied past Montreal.

The Reds trailed 4-2 in the eighth as they were on the verge of their 52nd home loss.

Young hit a one-out homer off Eischen (0-1), who then walked Robin Jennings. Dunn hit a full-count pitch barely over the wall in right for his 17th homer and only his third hit in his last 18 at-bats.
