JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri Secretary of State Matt Blunt has been sent to a Navy installation overseas after being called to active duty in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, his office said.

Blunt, a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve, is not in the Middle East but cannot say precisely where he is overseas, Spence Jackson, a spokesman for the secretary of state's office, said Monday.

The first-term Republican secretary of state reached his overseas post Saturday but does not know how long he will be on active duty, Jackson said.

Blunt would earn about $50,000 annually in the Navy, but plans to donate whatever money is not needed for living expenses to a charity, Jackson said.
