10 years ago: Oct. 30, 1991

Representatives of New Life World Outreach Center's ACT-45 television station have petitioned Citizens Cable TV Committee to add Christian station to Cape Girardeau's cable programming; Jack Cathcart, pastor of church, and several other citizens last week presented committee with petitions that included signatures of 3,000 Cape Girardeau and Jackson residents who want ACT-45 on cable; but Roger Harms, manager of TCI-Cablevision of Missouri, says there are no broadcast slots available for station.

For second time this year, CBS television show "Top Cops" has decided to recreate heroics of law enforcement officer from Cape Girardeau; Deputy U.S. Marshal Clarence Comer will step into spotlight as subject of segment that will probably air next season; "Top Cops'" fall premier included story of Timothy J. Ruopp, formerly of Cape Girardeau, who was killed in line of duty in 1984.

25 years ago: Oct. 30, 1976

Unusually high number of absentee ballots coupled with significant increase in number of registered voters is strong indication that Cape Girardeau County voter turnout at Tuesday's presidential election could be near record levels; but while all indications are that significant number of voters will go to polls, experts aren't predicting record turnout; county party leaders say they don't expect more than 60 percent of county's registered voters to go to polls.

Six thousand people turn out for free swine flu inoculation clinic at Alma Schrader School - the most to take part in any clinic around state thus far; as many as six physicians at a time are on hand at clinic, along with volunteer registered nurses and other workers who take information from participants, swab arms and give injections using four, high-speed "jet guns."

50 years ago: Oct. 30, 1951

Benton - Scott County poor farm, in continuous operation for 84 years, will be put up for sale at public auction on Nov. 14; County Court, after thoroughly studying matter, recently issued order for the sale; court took step when it was determined that residents of county farm could be maintained in private nursing homes at about half expense to county of operating the farm; farm consists of 312 acres and is located two miles east of here with access to it from either Commerce Road or Highway 55.

Tomb of Don Louis Lorimier, Cape Girardeau's founder, and his Indian consort, Pemanpieh, will be renovated as first phase of complete restoration of Old Lorimier Cemetery; Associated Committees for Historic Cape Girardeau announce plans for restoration program, which eventually will include resetting of the many stones in cemetery.

75 years ago: Oct. 30, 1926

Halloween in Cape Girardeau tonight promises to be wet affair - from weather man's point of view, of course; all other varieties of wetness, and of vandal pranks as well, are barred by police; while certain amount of hilarity is permissible - and even expected, it is stressed that no destruction of property, public or private, will be tolerated.

Four new cases of scarlet fever and equal number of new cases of typhoid in Cape Girardeau are reported by health authorities; new cases of scarlet fever bring total number of cases of that disease to 30, while there are total of eight cases of typhoid fever.
