Council to close meeting today on legal issues

The Cape Girardeau City Council will hold a special meeting behind closed doors at noon today to discuss a legal matter.

The meeting, announced in a press release Thursday, did not say what the meeting was about, but Councilman Butch Eggimann said it has to do with litigation and "possibly the finality of litigation," with the city.

State law allows a governmental body to hold a closed meeting regarding legal action or litigation.

Emerson mobile office to make stops Nov. 8

U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's mobile office will make stops in two area cities on Nov. 8.

The mobile office will be at the Marble Hill Library from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and at the Jackson Chamber of Commerce building from 2-3 p.m. Scott Dismuke, mobile office director, will answer questions and write down constituents' concerns.

Honorary diploma plan offered for veterans

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has worked with the Missouri Veterans Commission to implement "Operation Recognition," which was established this year by the General Assembly.

Through this statewide program, honorary high school diplomas will be awarded to eligible Missouri veterans who dropped out of school to serve in the armed forces during World War I, World War II or the Korean War.

Police investigate thefts of three vehicles from lot

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Sikeston police were investigating a burglary in which three vehicles were stolen.

The incident happened Thursday night at Cars Etc., and police think the suspects entered the business by breaking a window on the northeast corner of the building.

The suspects reportedly went through several desks, stealing a bag of keys for 54 vehicles. They then stole three vehicles.
