House Speaker Pro Tem comes to Southeast

Mark Abel, speaker pro tem of the Missouri House of Representatives, will speak to the College Democrats of Southeast Missouri State University at 7 p.m. Thursday in the University Center ballroom.

The Democrat of Festus, Mo., will speak about the last legislative session, the special session, and about the prescription drug bill he sponsored. He will also take questions from the audience.

Christmas beauty pageant taking entries

Katydid Productions will hold a Christmas pageant at Jefferson Elementary School in Cape Girardeau on Dec. 1. Winners from the regional pageant will receive a crown, embroidered sash, trophy, gift and royalty money. All contestants will receive a crown and gift.

The age categories are: 0-18 months; 19-35 months; 3-4 years; 5-6 years; 7-9 years; 10-12 years; 13-15 years; and 16 years and up.

Applications can be picked at Kidstop or Hansel & Gretel in Cape Girardeau, Bunny Patch or Kids Company in Dexter, Mo., Flowers in Malden, Mo., and Treehouse in Sikeston, Mo.

'Winter Treasures' sale scheduled in Benton

The St. Denis Home and School of Benton, Mo., is sponsoring its second annual "Winter Wonderland of Treasures" sale to be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 1 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 2, at the Parish Center on Highway 61.

This year will feature booths with crafts, specialty food items, and direct sale items.

Scouts to collect food donations on Nov. 17

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will conduct their annual "Scouting for Food" drive Saturday in Southeast Missouri. Scouts will walk throughout neighborhoods to distribute collections bags at each residential door.

Residents are asked to contribute non-perishable cans and packages of food and place the bags at their front door by 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, when the scouts will return to pick up the filled bags.

Food collected by the scouts will be given to area food pantries and churches for later distribution to needy families locally.

Cape firefighter discusses safety issues

Mike Morgan, fire marshal of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, will be the next guest on "Independently Speaking," shown at 5:30 a.m. Sunday on WDKA-TV cable channel 17 and at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and Nov. 27 on cable access channel 5.

Morgan will speak about fire safety and what steps to take in case of a fire or an emergency situation, and what a person with disabilities should do in case of an emergency.

Oran woman directs fund raiser at Mizzou

Students at the University of Missouri-Columbia annually hold "Rockin' Against Multiple Sclerosis," a campus-wide event to raise money for the MS Institute.

Donna Nicole Senciboy of Oran, Mo., was named one of three RAMS directors for 2002. This will be her third year on the committee.

Senciboy, a 1998 graduate of Oran High School, also is a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the student director of the Student Health Advisory Council. She is a biology major and the daughter of James and Doris Senciboy.

Fraternity gets ready for 'National Service Week'

Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed National Service Fraternity, has announced that Nov. 3-10 is "National Service Week."

The Beta Psi chapter of the Southeast Missouri State University has planned a week's worth of campus and community service activities. These projects include Habitat for Humanity, Highway Clean-Up, office assistance around the community, Houck Stadium clean-up, Merillac's Moveables, Diggin' in the Quad, Books for the Philippines, making teddy bears for a local ambulance company and much more.

The goals of the week-long event are to perform over 200 hours of service all in the name of "National Service Week," and get the entire campus performing service to make our community a better place to live.

Lutheran services plans fund raiser on Nov. 14

The Lutheran Family and Children's Services Auxiliary will hold its Fall Rally Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar, Mo.

Registration for "How Lutheran Family and Children's Services Touches Lives" begins at 9:30 a.m. and the offering collected will go toward the purchase of a fax machine for the Cape Girardeau Lutheran Family and Children's Services' office.
