First federal grand jury to serve Southeast Missouri will be impaneled early next year, says U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh; unlike state grand juries, which are often called to investigate specific problems, federal grand juries are essential to federal law enforcement because it is the only way criminal indictments can be handed down.

Area Wide United Way has raises $407,000, or 87 percent to its $470,000 goal, thanks in part to record-breaking employee contributions from Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co.

Scanning electron microscope with x-ray fluorescence and spectrophotometer are just two of pieces of equipment being shown off at open house at new headquarters of Southeast Missouri Regional Crime Laboratory, 714 N. Henderson; open house follows dedication of lab in afternoon.

Arena Building was filled to capacity last night with over 600 people dining, dancing and generally having good time at eighth annual Heritage Ball; proceeds from ball will be used for restoration of Glenn House.

50 years ago: Nov. 14, 1951

Eleven people - eight children and three adults - are left homeless by fire which guts six-room frame house at 615 rear Independence in morning; occupants of house, none of whom are injured, are Mrs. Lora Bledsoe; her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Hurt and their six children; and Bledsoe's two younger children.

Owners of Sunset Courts on Kingshighway, Forster family, have made application to city of Cape Girardeau for permit to construct another tourist establishment on highway, nearer Broadway; plan is to spend $70,000 on project; location of 20 units and dwelling would be opposite Standard Oil service station.

75 years ago: Nov. 14, 1926

The Rev. H.C. Hoy, pastor of Centenary Methodist Church, has been elected president of Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance; other officers are: Vice president, the Rev. O.L. Smith, pastor of First Christian Church; and secretary and treasurer, the Rev. Reinhart Lehmann, pastor of Christ Evangelical Church.

Members of faculty of Cape Girardeau Public Schools and Teachers College return from annual meeting of Missouri Teachers Association at Kansas City; visiting teachers had privilege while at Kansas City of seeing President Calvin Coolidge at dedication of Library Memorial there on Armistice Day, and also were in crowd that greeted Queen Marie of Rumania.
