Thunderstorms that rumbled across Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois yesterday dropped heavy rain and caused flash flooding in some low-lying areas; 5.54 inches of rain fell at Municipal Airport; many street intersections in Cape Girardeau and most of Main Street in Scott City flooded quickly in afternoon storm; water receded when rain stopped, but left behind numerous flooded vehicles whose drivers thought they could make it through high water.

Latest candidates to file petitions for election to City Council both urge cooperation among residents and local government to benefit city and generate economic growth; Melvin Gateley, retired public school educator and administrator, and Dr. Melvin Kasten, local physician, filed for council seats yesterday.

25 years ago: Nov. 20, 1976

Barbara Sackman has graciously admitted to being Cape Girardeau's most honored alumna; however, to win title, she also had to being city's oldest alumna, at age 94; contest sponsored by community relations committee of Cape Girardeau Public Schools to find city's oldest living graduate captured interest of many public school children.

SEMO District Fair Board has undertaken expansion of Arena Park fair parking facility on 23-acre site west of Rodney and south of Hawthorn Road; its completion is expected to alleviate crowded conditions at annual fair and even permit expansion of fairgrounds themselves, as land needed for parking can be free for other uses.

50 years ago: Nov. 20, 1951

Appointment of five-member rent advisory board for Cape Girardeau, first such group since prior one resigned about two years ago, is announced by area rent office in Idan-Ha Hotel; Prof. F.B. Moore of State College staff is made chairman, with Gale W. Heise, Maj. Frederick S. Hodgeman, Gay Chostner and Mrs. David Nunley as members; people having a rent complaint can be heard by new board.

Morris Shaltupsky, 96, is taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital for examination after he walks into moving automobile; accident happens on Broadway in front of H-H Building as Shaltupsky tries to cross busy street; he is father of Mike, David and Ben Shaltupsky and Mrs. David Minnen.

75 years ago: Nov. 20, 1926

Board of Education announces Broadway public school will be sold; bids for building and its valuable site on Broadway will be received by board until Nov. 29; contract of sale will stipulate that school may be used until July of next year, at which time new school in West End will be available for use; all children from Broadway School will then be moved to new school building, if Broadway property is sold.

Beginning Dec. 1, Marquette Cement Manufacturing plant will go on eight-hour basis; from time plant was constructed, it has operated on 11 and 13-hour-work-day basis; half men worked 11 hours each day and other half worked 13 hours, the two groups changing positions each month.
