Mural design featuring historic scene has been selected by Cape Girardeau Bicentennial Commission as "Bicentennial Mural"; design, by artist Jake Wells, will appear on building at Broadway and Fountain.

25 years ago: Dec. 9, 1976

Procter and Gamble Paper Products Co., which manufactures Pampers disposable diapers at its plant 15 miles north of Cape Girardeau, announces it will begin construction of third major expansion; new addition will add about 114,000 square feet of warehouse space to plant and will increase capacity for loading and unloading rail cars within plant.

Chaffee - Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night kept Rodger from making his appointed rounds, for nearly eight years; that is, until Monday, when people of this town of 3,000 were outraged to learn that Rodger, black-and-white shepherd-type dog adopted by post office, had been brutally slashed with knife in unprovoked attack; it took 17 stitches to close Rodger's wound.

50 years ago: Dec. 9, 1951

Virginia Schlegel of Cape Girardeau will begin her duties Monday as full-time office secretary for Trinity Lutheran Church; in this capacity, she will be assisting new pastor, the Rev. Wilbert C. Koenig, with secretarial work; Schlegel is replacing Thekla Melzer, who has accepted position as church secretary for Messiah Lutheran Church in St. Louis.

Fornfelt - Officials and fellow employees and their wives attended banquet given at Martin's Hall last night in honor of George Moore, who is retiring as road foreman of engineers for Cotton Belt Railroad after 49 years of service.

75 years ago: Dec. 9, 1926

By unified cooperation of peace officers, strong arm of law is extended to keep organized crime out of Southeast Missouri; sheriffs and other law-enforcement officers of district, meeting yesterday at Cape Girardeau, organized Southeast Missouri Peace Officers Association, which ultimately is planned to include every civil officer in this section in its wide scope of activity.

Campaign to sell Christmas seals to provide funds for eradication of tuberculosis in this county will close Dec. 18; handicapped by state association, which committee alleges flooded county with its seals and by recent burglaries of public schools here, in which some of money secured by schools in sale of stamps was stolen, committee is pushing for extra effort during closing days of campaign.
