CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A young Cape Central squad found itself overmatched Tuesday night as it suffered a 76-54 loss to host Carbondale in boys high school basketball action.

The Terriers stormed out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Carbondale led 39-22 at halftime and carried a commanding 60-36 advantage into the final eight minutes.

"Our young kids played hard for four quarters, but we were just outmanned at every position," said Cape Central coach Derek McCord, who saw his team fall to 1-6.

Sophomore Ryan Delph scored 21 points for Cape Central, but was the only Tiger to finish in double figures.

Six-foot-five senior Jashun Spearman scored a game-high 22 points for Carbondale (4-5) and Maurice Gibbs added 15.

SCOTT COUNTY 49, SCOTT CITY 47

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Scott City remained winless, but the Rams almost pulled off an upset.

"We made some strides tonight," said Scott City coach Kerry Thompson. "We played a lot better overall."

The Braves (6-1), who trailed 30-24 at halftime, got 15 points from both Terrance Williams and Chris Pullen. Chris Johnson added 11.

The Rams (0-5) were paced by eight points from D.J. Walton, Chad Weatherspoon and Andy Beck.

BLOOMFIELD 65, CHAFFEE 62

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee lost yet another close game as the Red Devils fell to 1-4.

"Fourteen points and we'd be 5-0," said Chaffee coach David Mirly. "We're playing hard, but it's frustrating because we're so close."

Chase Eskew scored 20 points, Andrew Horrell had 15 and James Reischman added 14 for the Red Devils, who led 26-20 at halftime.

WOODLAND 64, MEADOW HEIGHTS 60

PATTON, Mo. -- In a battle of area small schools having solid seasons, Woodland built a big lead and held off Meadow Heights as both squads are now 6-2.

Luke Johnson paced the Cardinals, who led 37-23 at halftime, with 20 points while also in double figures were Michael Owens with 19 and Alex VanGennip with 16.

The Panthers got 18 points from Joey Bell and 11 from Chris Burr. Meadow Heights suffered a blow when point guard and leading scorer Josh Mayfield suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter that puts his status for next week's University High Christmas Tournament in jeopardy.

ORAN 63, ST. VINCENT 58

ORAN, Mo. -- Ryne Wood poured in 27 points and hit four 3-pointer to lead Oran past St. Vincent as the Eagles handed the Indians their first loss of the season.

The Eagles (6-1), who led 31-22 at halftime and 49-35 after three quarters, also got 16 points from Nathan Seyer.

The Indians (3-1) were paced by Adam Bockman with 14 points. Matt Wengert added 13 and Andrew Prost had 11.

ADVANCE 76, KELLY 44

BENTON, Mo. -- Hot-shooting Advance hit nine of its 12 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Hornets romped.

The Hornets (6-1), who led 31-14 after one quarter and 43-22 at halftime, got 29 points from Andrew Jenkins as he hit five 3-pointers. Jared Ritter added 13 points and Jason Bahr had 10.

Major Burger paced nine points for Kelly (1-6).

DELTA 55, LEOPOLD 44

LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Delta used a big fourth quarter to rally past Leopold.

The Bobcats (2-6) outscored the Wildcats (2-6) 22-8 in the final period to erase a 36-33 deficit.

Joey Keys paced Delta with 16 points while Craig Bock and Lance Kinder added 15 apiece.

Leopold got 13 points from Scott VanGennip and 10 from Paul Hutchings.

MARQUAND 67, CALEDONIA VALLEY 45

CALEDONIA, Mo. -- Marquand jumped out to a 20-6 first-quarter lead and coasted to victory.

The Tigers (4-5) were led by Jared Kunz with 18 points and Jason Thomas with 14, offsetting a 25-point effort by Valley's Tim Jones.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

KELLY 74, ELLINGTON 35

BROSELEY, Mo. -- Kelly crushed Ellington in the consolation bracket of the Twin Rivers Tournament.

Kelly (7-2) had dropped its opener to Charleston 52-48 Saturday.

Bridgett Riley led a trio of Lady Hawks in double figures with 16 points. Cara Scherer and Ashley Payne had 15 and 11 points, respectively.

CAPE CENTRAL 100, OAKVILLE 79

The Tigers had an impressive home performance as they raised their record in dual meets to 2-3.

Double individual winners for the Tigers were Sam Maguire (50 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Andrew Moreton (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke). Central's other individual first-place finisher was diver Cecil Quinn.
