Promising to bring conservative, common sense business approach to state government, Sikeston Mayor Bill Burch formally declares his candidacy for Missouri Senate; Burch plans to file for Democratic nomination.

Construction of new $16 million shopping mall, described by developer George Staples Jr. of Charleston as "finest between St. Louis and Memphis," is scheduled to get under way June 1 on city's west side; Westborough Mall, 711,000-square-foot facility, has come off drawing boards after first being announced in late 1973; site for mall is bounded on north by Route K, on east by Kingshighway, on south by Bloomfield Road and on west by residential section in vicinity of Edgewood drive.

With river barge traffic at standstill and new snow clogging city streets, Girardeans face fourth consecutive zero or below zero temperatures; snow begins falling heavily at 7:30 a.m., and predictions are for accumulation of another three inches of snow on top of 10 inches still on ground from Thursday and Sunday.

50 years ago: Jan. 13, 1952

Sikeston - One man is in Sikeston Community Hospital and another is in Scott County Jail at Benton as result of double shooting in tavern in Sunset Addition Saturday night; trouble centered around Gerard "Happy" Hunt's tavern and dance hall; man arrested fired shotgun into tavern and then into several houses; P.C. Falls of Sikeston was wounded when he tried to stop shooter.

Dies, Mrs. Elizabeth Riddle, 83, at local hospital, where she had been patient since Jan. 8; Riddle was born Jan. 23, 1869, at Jersey Shore, Pa., and came to Cape Girardeau in 1940; her husband, E. Riddle, died 26 years ago; she is survived by two daughters and three grandchildren.

75 years ago: Jan. 13, 1927

First transfer of real estate to Cape Girardeau Bridge Co. is offered for record in recorder's office at Jackson; it is in nature of contract for sale of lots 5 and 6, in Range "H"; price asked for lots, facing 150 feet on Morgan Oak, is $7,500 by present owners, Clara, Agnes and Anna Osterloh, and bridge company agrees to pay that price, provided owners waive all claims for damages resulting from change of grade of Morgan Oak street to remainder of Osterloh property.

Price of gasoline drops one cent in Cape Girardeau, to 21.6 cents per gallon; it is lowest price in more than year; price includes two-cent sales tax levied for road-building purposes.- Sharon K. Sanders
