Storey's Food Giant began task of moving out of its facility at 201 S. Broadview Monday; Joel Kaye, Storey's district manager at Sikeston, says store closed permanently because of "a breach of contract" by owners of Cape Centre, shopping development in which store is located.

Missouri Supreme Court last week ruled in city's favor in long-standing dispute over legality of Cape Girardeau's gross-sales license tax; case involved group of auto dealers in Cape Girardeau who filed lawsuit claiming tax is invalid.

25 years ago: March 3, 1977

Demolition has begun on commercial stone-crushing plant that was in operation on South Sprigg for best part of three quarters of century; plant was built by Edward L. Hely Stone Co. in early 1900s and formerly produced 30 carloads of crushed stone a day, first for railroads and then for streets and highway construction; operations at plant continued from 1902 until February 1976, when Southeast Missouri Stone Co. suspended production.

Air-Illinois will suspend its flight service to Cape Girardeau March 15 because declining passenger volume doesn't justify cost of providing security screening here, firm has announced.

50 years ago: March 3, 1952

Acting at request of police and fire departments, city council calls election on adoption of proposed police and firemen's pension plan, to be held concurrently with general city balloting on April 1; submitted with ordinance calling election is copy of proposed plan, which provides 25-cent tax levy per $100 assessed valuation and deduction of 2 1/2 percent from paychecks of members of two departments.

Members of Cape Girardeau Dental Society, observing recently announced policy of Missouri Division of Health on fluoridation of public water supplies, recalls that organization more than year ago endorsed such a step locally; state agency has recognized benefits of fluoride in control of tooth decay.

75 years ago: March 3, 1927

Garbage collection, under terms of contract drawn with city council, begins in Cape Girardeau by two livestock breeders of near here who have been given exclusive right to this privilege; Charles L. Blattner and Oscar Royce have one-year contracts with city and each is responsible for collecting refuse in half of town.

Headquarters Company of Third Battalion of 140th Infantry, Missouri National Guard, was given its annual federal inspection at armory on Good Hope last night; Service Company, another Cape Girardeau organization, will be inspected this evening.
