Southeast baseball bounces back, wins at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Brad Purcell pitched seven strong innings as Southeast Missouri State University defeated Memphis 7-4 in college baseball Saturday.

The Indians, who lost to Memphis on Friday, improved to 2-6 while the Tigers fell to 3-5. The squads will close their three-game series at 1 p.m. today.

Purcell (1-1) allowed two runs in the first inning, then worked six shutout innings. He gave up six hits while striking out six and walking two.

Andy Davidson gave up two unearned runs over the final two innings. He allowed one hit, with three strikeouts and no walks.

Southeast had seven hits, two by Brian Hopkins. Ryan Govek drove in two runs.

Southeast lacrosse team opens season at home today

Southeast's lacrosse team, a non-varsity club squad in its inaugural season, will have its first game today at home against Missouri-Rolla.

The 3 p.m. contest will he held at the Southeast intramural fields on the corner of Sprigg and Bertling. Admission is free.

Matt Bose's RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Oklahoma to a 9-8 win over Missouri at Norman, Okla.

The Tigers (6-6, 0-2 Big 12) scored five runs in the second inning and added three in the fourth to take an 8-3 lead. The Sooners (10-4, 2-0) steadily chipped away at the lead, scoring one run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Golf

Mike Weir and Brett Wetterich were tied for the lead at 14 under when the third round of the Honda Classic was halted because of darkness at Coral Springs, Fla.

Weir completed 10 holes on the TPC at Heron Bay, and Wetterich played 11. Twenty-four others were within four strokes of the lead.

Ernie Els moved into position for his second straight victory, shooting a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke lead in the Dubai Desert Classic at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Gavin Coles shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Bryce Molder after the third round of the Jacob's Creek Open at Adelaide, Australia.

Hale Irwin shot a 7-under 64 to take a three-stroke lead in the Toshiba Senior Classic at Newport Beach, Calif.

Motorsports

Damon Lusk won the rain-shortened ARCA Series Pork The Other White Meat 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, narrowly beating Chad Blount back to the caution flag with 45 laps left when the rain started at Hampton,Ga.

It was Lusk's first ARCA victory. Cam Strader finished third, followed by Michael Vergers, making just his second series start.

Tennis

Andre Agassi defeated Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic at Scottsdale, Ariz.

He will face Juan Balcells, who completed his surprising march through the bracket with a 6-3, 6-1 semifinal rout of Rainer Schuetter.

Second-seeded Martina Hingis, beat Silvija Talaja 6-0, 6-1 in the third round of the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

Monica Seles also advanced, beating Martina Sucha 6-0, 6-3. Jelena Dokic edged Elena Bovina 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Meghann Shaughnessy defeated Nicole Pratt 6-4, 6-1.

Other winners were Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Amanda Coetzer and Eva Dyrberg.
