SOUTHEAST BASEBALL TEAM PLAYS AT HOME TODAY

Southeast Missouri State University's baseball team will host Culver-Stockton today in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Capaha Field. The squads will also have a 1 p.m. single game Sunday.

The Indians (3-7) have played just one home game so far, losing to Evansville 7-5 on Wednesday.

The Wildcats (7-6) are a strong NAIA program that went a school-record 45-18 last year.

Raul Chavez hit a grand slam and Brad Ausmus had a solo homer as the Houston Astros defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 in Jupiter, Fla.

Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile, in his first start since offseason arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, threw two perfect innings.

"I was just glad to be back out there," Kile said. "The shoulder feels fine."

Andy Benes, working in relief of Kile, gave up two runs and three hits, including Ausmus' homer leading off the fourth inning. Benes walked two and struck out four in five innings.

Colleges

Fresno State's Jerry Tarkanian retired from coaching college basketball, tossing in his chewed-up towel after a career that spanned four decades and mixed success with scandal.

The 71-year-old coach will become a consultant for Fresno State, his alma mater, and the school's basketball court at the new Save Mart Center will be named in his honor.
