Southeast Missouri State University Provost Leslie Cochran has been named president of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio; he will succeed Neil D. Humphrey, 63, who is retiring June 30; Cochran has served at provost at Southeast for past 12 years.

U.S. Attorney's satellite office at Cape Girardeau announced yesterday that federal grand jury for Southeast Missouri has formed and has returned its first indictment; with Southeast Missouri now having its own grand jury, law enforcement authorities will no longer have to seek federal indictments out of St. Louis.

Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents has voted to hike various student fees over two-year period; room and board fees at Chaney and Myers halls will be raised by $30 per semester, while fees in other residence halls will be up next fall by only $5.

Oak Ridge - Temporary board of directors was selected and volunteers and donations were sought at first organizational meeting Thursday for fire protection service in Oak Ridge area.

Caruthersville - Rural folk in southern Pemiscot County face problem of recovering from tornado damage estimated at one million dollars in time to begin spring planting around April 15; County Extension Agent W.F. James says he counted between 70 and 100 buildings destroyed or badly damaged in Cooter and Cottonwood Point areas; damage to farm machinery was heavy.

Proposed firemen and policemen pension plan, scheduled to be voted on next week, has been withdrawn by two city employee groups following meeting with their attorney; Rush H. Limbaugh Jr., attorney, explains there are certain technical provisions of plan that must be changed, and vote wouldn't be legal if these were made subsequent to notice of election.

75 years ago: March 25, 1927

Property owners opposing installation of storm water sewer system in central Cape Girardeau presented their protests in person at public hearing held by city council in Common Pleas courthouse; hearing is attended by nearly 50 protesting property owners, whose main argument is that city is "overburdened" and people are "drained financially."

Temporary injunctions forbidding sale of liquor at two roadhouses near Cape Girardeau, raided by authorities last weekend, were issued in circuit court yesterday.
