PERRYVILLE -- Voters in Perry County will be asked April 7 to approve installation of countywide 911 emergency telephone system; 911 service was installed in city of Perryville in April, after having been approved by city voters one year earlier.

Gentle spring rain that began early yesterday morning turned into vicious flash flood by nightfall, forcing about 100 people from their homes and inundating several parts of city; by 8 a.m. today, 7.38 inches of rain had been recorded at Municipal Airport, most since flash flood in May 1973 dumped 9.5 inches of rain on city; hardest hit areas by flash flooding, which began around 6 p.m., were in Town Plaza and Cape West shopping areas, along Terry Lane, both adjacent to Walker Creek and near Gaslight Trailer Court, Route W along Cape LaCroix Creek, and major portion of South Cape Girardeau.

Raymond A. Ritter Night was observed at St. Vincent's College last night recognizing 40 years of service to students, priests and brothers who he treated without charge.

Joseph J. Feuchter of St. Louis, city's consulting traffic engineer, says there should be no change in present two-way plan of traffic movement on Main Street; study he did for Traffic Advisory Committee showed that on average week day, 3,850 vehicles used Main Street between Broadway and Independence; of these 1,950 were northbound, entering from South Main from Independence.

Cattle breeders from five states pay total of $37,175 for 52 lots of registered livestock at Spring Show and Sale of Southeast Missouri Aberdeen-Angus Breeders' Association at Arena Building.

75 years ago: March 28, 1927

In formal statement, city council announces it will temporarily postpone installation of proposed $125,000 storm sewer in central area of Cape Girardeau; this action comes at time that council was preparing to receive bids for the construction work; it is understood that project will be first on program in 1928.

Taking of testimony begins in Common Pleas Court in second trial of suit for $45,000 damages brought by Paul F. Dietrich, former ice dealer of Cape Girardeau, against three other ice concerns, which he alleges in 1920 formed a "trust" to force him out of business; in first trial of case, Dietrich was awarded $24,000, but state Supreme Court reversed decision.-- Sharon K.
