LOCAL SKATERS BRING HOME MEDALS FROM DISTRICT EVENT

A group of 14 ice skaters from The Ice in Cape Giradeau received several trophies after their district competition in Peoria, Ill., against other teams from Missouri, Illinois and Kansas.

The skaters competed in a variety of events, including freestyle (comparable to long Olympic-style events), compulsories, footwork, spotlight and interpretive.

The Cape group won 27 first-place individual awards, 16 second-place awards, seven third-place awards, a fourth-place award and two fifth-place awards. The group finished second overall among 12 teams.

The team members who competed: Taylor Bingaman, Cedar Buero, Shyah Buero, Chelsie Clubb, Amanda Craven, Tara Craven, Ashley Diemer, Sara Diemer, Lisa Lane, Adam Floro, Hannah Floro, Heather Floro, Sallie Steiner, and Whitney Steward.

The group will skate in an exhibition event at 5 p.m. Saturday at The Ice in the Plaza Galleria at 2001 Independence.

Liselotte Neumann played bogey-free and posted a 3-under-par 69 to take a one-stroke lead in the LPGA's first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Jim Carter shot a bogey-free 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead in the Shell Houston Open at The Woodlands, Texas.
