Go-cart prize for some lucky young race fan

A member of the Junior Racing Club at the Auto Tire and Parts Racetrack near Benton, Mo., will win a go-cart at the end of the racing season.

The junior club is for race enthusiasts, 12 and younger. The prize was presented to the racetrack by Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. Junior club members can register when they visit the track.

Red House construction to start on Saturday

The Cape Girardeau Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission will meet Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Red House site in Cape Girardeau. Volunteers should bring gloves, hammers, saws, pencils and refreshments, said Steve Strom, the project's construction engineer.

A number of city officials will join volunteers at the group's first session, said Strom. Volunteers may contact the Convention and Visitor's Bureau at 335-1631, to reserve a work time.

The Red House site is across from Old St. Vincent's Church at Main and William and will be similar to the trading post built by the city's founder, Don Louis Lorimier.

Downtown Chalk Walk tests painting skills

Participants can enter the Downtown Cape Chalk Walk street-painting competition Saturday. The contest is open to people and groups who will create chalk paintings on selected sidewalks.

The contest will be held on a section of the parking lot in front of the Wall of Fame.

In exchange for the entry fee of $7 in advance -- $10 on the day of the contest -- competitors will receive a 24-pack of chalk. Cost for children is $1. Contest originator Craig Thomas said bringing extra chalk is advised.

Participants will meet at the park pavilion at 8 a.m., with drawing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Judging will start about 3:30 p.m.

Willow Groves Rockets planning reunion

The Willow Groves Roller City Rockets will hold a reunion at the Chaffee Roller Rink from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

New pavilion to greet visitors at winery

A new pavilion will greet visitors at the River Ridge Winery this weekend.

The winery will join in the 12th annual Mississippi Valley Scenic Drive Saturday and Sunday, featuring food, wine and entertainment.

The "Too Wet to Plow" band will provide music from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, and the Jerry Ford Combo will play from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Beginning Experience to hold dance

Beginning Experience of Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri will sponsor a public dance from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. May 4 at St. Vincent de Paul Parish gymnasium in Cape Girardeau.

Beginning Experience is an organization to help widowed, separated and divorced people adjust to their single lives, said Bernadette Gardner, Beginning Experience president.

Golf tournament prizes set for hole-in-one

A special prize will be awarded for a hole-in-one on hole No. 8 during the Cape Shrine Club golf tournament May 17 at the Bent Creek Golf Course at Jackson, Mo., but, it won't be a new car.

During an earlier news release, it was reported in The Missourian that a vehicle would be presented for the hole-in-one. The Missourian regrets the error.

Shriners, non-Shriners and duffers are eligible for four-person scramble event. In addition to prizes to the top teams, there will be prizes for a hole-in-one, closest to the pin, closest to the line, longest putt and longest drive.

The cost is $65 a person. Tee-time is 1 p.m. with a shotgun start.

100-mile yard sale May 23 through 27

The city of Kennett has made preparations for the 100-Mile Yard Sale May 23 through May 27. Kennett will sponsor a one-day, citywide yard sale May 25.

This year marks the fourth year the event will be held along Highway 25 between Jackson and Kennett. Brochures will be available soon for the Memorial Weekend event.

Genealogy Society plans June 22 speaker, meeting

Lorena Shell Eaker will be guest speaker at the Cape Girardeau County Genealogy Society meeting at 7:30 p.m. June 22 at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson.

Eaker has written books on the Eaker family and German-speaking people west of the Catawba River in North Carolina. She has a forthcoming book on the Frederick Wise family.

Pig roast June 27 to raise funds for MDA

The fourth annual Muscular Dystrophy Association pig roast will be held from 3 p.m. to closing June 27 at Diana's Lounge in Sikeston, Mo.

The cost is $3 for the all-you-can-eat meal. Drink specials, pool tournaments and door prizes will be available.

Proceeds will benefit the Twin Rivers Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
