SOUTHEAST GOLFERS BEGIN PLAY IN OVC TOURNAMENT

Southeast Missouri State University's golf team will begin play today in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Paducah, Ky. The 54-hole event runs through Wednesday.

Austin Peay is the defending champion in the nine-team event. Southeast finished eighth last season.

Southeast's Bryan Johnson, who made the five-member all-conference team last year, is the only Indian ranked among the league's top 15 golfers. Johnson's average of 75 for 18 holes is tied for 14th.

Area high school golfers compete in district meets

Area high school golf teams will compete this week in district tournaments at various sites.

Cape Girardeau Central and Jackson will be in today's Class 4A, District 1 Tournament at Quail Creek Golf Course in St. Louis. Also today, Perryville participates in the 3A, District 1 Meet at Eagle Lake Golf Course in Farmington.

Notre Dame will host Tuesday's 2A, District 1 Tournament at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Defending 1A state champion St. Vincent will take part in Friday's 1A, District 1 Tournament at the Ste. Genevieve Golf Club.

The top two teams in each district, along with the top five individuals not on those squads, qualify for the state tournaments May 13-14.

The NHL suspended Boston defenseman Kyle McLaren for the rest of the Bruins' playoff series against Montreal for the hit that sent Richard Zednik to the hospital.

Colin Campbell, the league's executive vice president and director of hockey operations, said he did not think the hit was a deliberate attempt to injure, and added that he took into account McLaren's reputation as a clean player.

Figure skating

Two key American witnesses in the Olympic figure skating scandal want the U.S. member of the International Skating Union council disqualified from a hearing today, claiming she prejudged the case in favor of the French judge and federation chief.

Referee Ron Pfenning and Jon Jackson, a skating judge who testified that he witnessed a confession of vote-fixing by Marie-Reine Le Gougne in Salt Lake City, have asked the ISU council to bar Claire Ferguson from the hearing.
