JENKINS, HEDDELL FINISH STRONG AT DRAKE RELAYS

Southeast Missouri State University track & field athletes Heather Jenkins and Jay Heddell posted impressive performances during the Drake Relays held over the weekend.

Jenkins, a freshman from Cape Girardeau Central High School, finished fifth in the discus (158 feet 8 inches).

Heddell was eighth in the discus (170-1) on Friday, then traveled to the Missouri-Kansas City Invitational on Saturday to win the shot put (56-7 1/2) and place third in the discus (160-7).

Also at the Missouri-Kansas City meet, Meleisa Greene was second in the long jump and Jackson High School product Lindsey Meyr placed third.

Finally, in a meet at Murray State, Sara Kaznica was second in the pole vault while Megan House was third in the discus and fourth in the shot put.

Southeast will host the Ohio Valley Conference Championships Friday and Saturday.

Southeast golfers start 5th in OVC Tournament

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Southeast Missouri State University's golf team is in fifth place after Monday's opening round of the 54-hole Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

Morehead State leads with a 295, followed by Murray State at 299. The next five squads in the nine-team event are separated by only four strokes, with Southeast at 306.

Morehead State's Nick Atzinger is the individual leader with a 2-under-par 70. Southeast's Woody Hill is tied for sixth at 74.

Other Southeast scores from the first round are Jimmy Blose (76), Kent Phillips (77), Bryan Johnson (79) and Matt Hillis (84).

Johnson was voted by the league's coaches to the six-player all-OVC team for the second year in a row.

Kohlfeld Scorpions beat Hornets in rugby match

The Kohlfeld Scorpions Rugby Club of Cape Girardeau defeated the St. Louis Hornets 24-10 Saturday in Arena Park.

Kohlfeld overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to remain undefeated in Missouri Rugby Union Cup play.

T.J. Ebner scored three trys and Jimmy Randle had one. Mark Lineberry added two conversion kicks.

The Scorpions' next match will be Saturday against Principia College in Arena Park.

McClain, Grady win in horseshoe group event

Richie McClain and Randy Grady teamed to win the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event Sunday at the American Legion Hall in Benton, Mo. Joe Felter and Tyler Elfrink were second with Rose Kern and Perry Seys third.

In the group's season-opening event April 21 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson, Mo., Irv Vandeven and Herman Campbell won with Beth McClain and Elfrink second and Bob Burnett and Kory Kluesner third.

Shawnee to host regional softball tournament

ULLIN, Ill. -- The NJCAA Div. II region 24 women's softball tournament will begin Friday and end Sunday at Shawnee Community College.

Competing teams are Shawnee, John Wood, Parkland, Danville, Lincoln Land, Lewis and Clark, Lakeland and Spoon River. Sunday's championship will be at noon.-- From staff reports
