Smith (1-0) was a stand-in starter for Garrett Stephenson, who was scratched earlier in the day and remained on the disabled list because the team wasn't confident he's fully healed from a lower back injury.

The 29-year-old Smith gave up three hits, walked two and struck out four. He signed as a minor league free agent in November after leading the Texas League with a 15-8 record for Double-A Round Rock last season.

Jason Isringhausen got the last four outs for his fourth save in five chances, overcoming two errors by second baseman Fernando Vina in the ninth.
