Why are we cutting down trees on William, really? Expanding the street made sense when we were looking at having a gambling boat because of the traffic, but it didn't materialize. Also, most of the traffic will be redirected once we get the new bridge done. Who comes up with these plans, anyway?

Musical advice

This is in regard to the low sale of tickets for the Smash Mouth concert. In my opinion it has absolutely nothing to do with the Show Me Center or promotions, it has to do with the people who choose to come to Cape for concerts. How about getting someone who is worth seeing instead of country and rock all of the time? Get Nelly, a St. Louis native, here. It definitely would sell out. He went to Poplar Bluff and Carbondale. Why not Cape?

Open your mind

To the narrow-minded people who do not wish to assist the St. Louis Cardinals in building a new stadium: You are wet between the ears. It is a fact that the St. Louis Cardinals, Rams and the Blues, along with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals, bring a tremendous amount of tax money to this state.

Remember this

Before the Southeast Missourian editorial staff criticizes Cape's new mayor in any way, even mildly or by implication, they perhaps need to be reminded that he is a seasoned biker.

Wanting it all

In his insightful letter to the editor, the wonderful Dr. Ed Masters, my physician and a world-class medical re-searcher to boot, posed the question as to what we want when it comes to medical care -- easy access to physicians, top notch treatment, or cheap cost -- implying that all three are not possible and that they were, to some extent, mutually exclusive. Though a child of the '60s, so to speak, Dr. Masters was obviously unaffected by it and does not recognize that those of us who were affected by the '60s mentality want it all and want it now.

In too deep

So Senator Carnahan comes to the area and tries to help, but she isn't even mentioned until deep into the story. Wonder where Kit Bond would be in the story if he'd shown up? I think higher. Heck, if Peter Kinder had showed up, he'd have gotten his face on the front page. Just one more example of your news coverage skewed to the right.

Being as Paul Boyd of Sikeston is neither a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, nor a judge in any court in the land, nor a lawyer, nor a widely recognized expert in Constitutional law, his opinion on the constitutionality of a commuter tax for Cape is hereby ruled null and void. Court is adjourned.

I can't believe someone was nagging about being interrupted by Bob Reeves. I'm sorry that your "Oprah" show about miracles was interrupted. If you really wanted to, you could have gotten into your car and traveled to where the storm damage occurred and seen some miracles in real life or maybe even have been involved in one.

Take courage

The Jackson residents who are valiantly trying to get their voices heard regarding their concerns on MoDOT's proposed changes to Highway 34/72 are to be commended for their hard work and dedication. Since the public birth of this project, this highway has taken its share of twists and turns. First a three-lane was discussed, then a five-lane, then a four-lane, limited access with a beautifully landscaped median, and finally now, because of safety, a four-lane, limited access, raised concrete median with limited landscaping at intersections with a bicycle and pedestrian trail running along the north side of the highway is what Jackson is getting. Please tell me why a bicycle and pedestrian trail would even be considered along a highway that has approximately 16,000 vehicles traveling it daily? I've heard said that 95 percent of Jackson doesn't really care what happens to 34/72. That's simply not true. Petitions requesting MoDOT's consideration of a five-lane highway that would not inhibit emergency access, limit business growth or decrease property values are being actively distributed. Within a two-week time frame, over 1,100 signatures were obtained, and the count keeps climbing. That is pretty remarkable for a town of approximately 12,000. Great work!

Not really pretty

To the person who commented on what a pretty spring we're having, I think you are wrong. I don't know where you get your information, but you can't fool me with your agenda of blatant lies and falsehoods regarding the weather. I think you should be ashamed of yourself and apologize.

Church not alone

I would like to comment on all the things being written about the Catholic Church. To begin with, how many other churches are having this problem and not being written about? I know that in other churches, preachers mess around and even break up marriages. Also, how many deacons have had sex with younger girls or younger boys? So let's not pick on just one church. I work in a field where sex molesters have to register, and they come from all denominations.

Build panic room

I'm not saying people who slave away at the Southeast Missourian stir up too much controversy and anger large segments of the public are unprepared for the consequences, but have you guys ever considered building a panic room?

Balance of power

Though I support Jean Carnahan, I disagree with the Speak Out caller who referred to Gary Rust's rhetoric in favor of her opponent as worthless. Rust holds the balance of power and will, as a result of his vigorous support of Jim Talent, swing the election in his favor. Sorry.

What happened?

I thought when I voted for Perryville's school bond issue in November I was voting to keep existing programs. The article mentions that they are to receive grant money for the alternative school. So tell me again, what did I vote for?

A real credit

How beautiful Capaha Park looked after the good neighbor cleanup. It was a real credit to the city, and much praise is due to the workers. However, Sunday morning, as I took my walk through the Park, the Cherry Hill area looked absolutely disgusting. The party that used Shelter 4 left it in shambles: beer cans, soda cans, empty containers all over the place, even cooking utensils left on the grills. Shame on you guys. It is also a shame that Cherry Hill has become a tailgate party place for the ball games.
