Area resident faces charges in ex-wife's death

CAIRO, Ill. -- Police are investigating the shooting death of a 54-year-old Cairo woman who died Monday, after being flown to Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Police said her estranged husband, James Patterson, is being held in Alexander County Jail in connection with the incident.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner Mike Hurst said Barbara Patterson died from multiple gunshot wounds. Her body was sent to the state medical examiner in Farmington, Mo., for further investigation.
Illinois State Police are heading the investigation.
