Minnesota finds more home-run success against Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Torii Hunter homered twice as the Minnesota Twins hit five against Kansas City for the second time this season and routed the Royals 14-5 Thursday.

Jacque Jones, Cristian Guzman and Tom Prince also connected for the Twins, who added five doubles and set season highs in runs and hits (18). Kyle Lohse (3-2) allowed three runs -- one earned -- in five innings.

Hunter, 4-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored, homered off Chris George (0-4) in the first inning and had a three-run shot off Brian Shouse in the seventh as the Royals fell to 0-2 under new manager Tony Pena.

In an 8-6 victory on opening day, Jones hit two home runs while David Ortiz, Brian Buchanan and Hunter, who now has 11, added one each.

Yankees 13, Devil Rays 0

NEW YORK -- Alfonso Soriano hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch, giving David Wells all the support he needed.

With Wells (6-1) pitching a three-hitter, the Yankees posted their most lopsided shutout since beating Cleveland 14-0 on April 18, 1992. Wells walked none and struck out six in his 11th career shutout, and first since 2000.

Jorge Posada, Nick Johnson and Bernie Williams kept up the early home-run barrage. The Yankees lead the majors with 62 homers, including 14 in four games.

A night after Tampa Bay got six runs in the top of the first, the Yankees scored six times in the bottom half. Tampa Bay hurt itself, tying a team record by making three errors in the inning.

Mariners 15, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO -- Mike Cameron hit a grand slam, and Mark McLemore went 5-for-5 as Seattle won another road game.

Cameron's homer was his first since he tied a major league record by hitting four on May 2. McLemore matched a franchise record and equaled his career high for hits. He hit a three-run homer as the Mariners improved to a major-league best 16-3 on the road.

Carlos Guillen also homered and drove in three runs to back Joel Pineiro (4-0), who allowed two unearned runs on four hits in seven innings while striking out six and walking none. Luke Prokopec (2-5) lost for the Blue Jays, who haven't won a series at home this season.

Athletics 5, Red Sox 0

BOSTON -- Barry Zito allowed five hits in eight innings as Oakland won for just the third time in 13 games. Zito (4-2) struck out six and walked none.

Jermaine Dye hit a two-run double in the first inning for Oakland, which avoided being swept by Boston for the second week in a row. The Red Sox lost for just the third time in 11 games.

The A's took a 3-0 lead before Frank Castillo (2-4) got an out. Eric Byrnes, who had a career-high three hits, and Randy Velarde opened with back-to-back singles, and Eric Chavez walked to load the bases before Dye's double.

White Sox 4, Rangers 0

CHICAGO -- Dan Wright pitched a five-hitter for his first career shutout.

Wright (4-4), who gave up eight runs in 2 2-3 innings in his last start, was sharp against the Rangers. He struck out four and walked one.

Wright struck out Alex Rodriguez to end Chicago's second shutout of the season. The Rangers have been blanked just twice.

Paul Konerko extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the fourth inning on a double down the left-field line off Kenny Rogers (4-2). Carlos Lee followed with an RBI single to give the White Sox the only run they would need.
