Southeast Missouri State University Board of regents will consider adopting $49.87 million operating budget for 1993 fiscal year when it meets next week; personnel costs for fiscal year are budgeted at $36.3 million in salaries and benefits, plus $1.2 million to pay students who work on campus.

Bidding will begin June 30 on project to install traffic signals and divisional islands and do resurfacing at Bloomfield and Kingshighway, according to Missouri Highway Department; project was sought by public after outcry arose over number of fatal accidents at that hazardous intersection in past years.

Scott City - Jack Holder, owner and operator of City Sanitation Services, is awarded three-year contract for city trash hauling by city council; his bid of $3 per month per residence for twice weekly pickup also includes required performance bond and insurance.

50 years ago: June 6, 1952

Basin surrounding Civil War memorial statue in Courthouse Park is being filed with mixture of river sand and clay, and flowers will be planted where youngsters used to frolic in water of fountain.

Winds that reached peak velocity of 70 miles per hour lashed Cape Girardeau yesterday afternoon in sudden thunderstorm that caused no great damage despite its dangerous potentialities; wind blew two primary lines of Missouri Utilities Co. down, putting crews on emergency duty, and did other scattered damage to other electric lines.

75 years ago: June 6, 1927

Rising 12 inches in past 48 hours, Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is moving upward at alarming rate, bringing new threat of serious flood to portions of previously inundated areas of this district; stage in morning is 34.7 feet; stage of 36 feet by Thursday, only four feet below crest of six weeks ago, is predicted.

Honorary degrees of master of arts and doctor of philosophy were conferred on the Rev. Dana J. Dugan, C.M., treasurer of Niagara University in Niagara N.Y., at commencement exercises held yesterday in auditorium of St. Vincent's College; regular graduation exercises of college were held May 1, when 14 students were graduated.
