Jackson Legion team beats Stoddard Co.

DEXTER, Mo. -- Jackson's American Legion baseball team improved to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in District 14 play with a 13-6 win over Stoddard County Saturday night.

Matt Gordon, Michael Birk and Josh Van de Ven all had three of Jackson's 16 hits. Bryan Austin, Jake Carter and Trevor Thompson added two hits each.

Tyler Ward pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief for the victory. He allowed four hits and two runs, with one strikeout and two walks.

Sunday, Jackson was leading Paducah, Ky., 6-5 in the top of the seventh inning when rained washed out the remainder of that contest and the second game of a scheduled doubleheader. The first game will be completed and the second game made up at a later date.

Jackson returns to action tonight, visiting Ballard County, Ky., for a doubleheader.

Gil Morgan won his first title of the year and 21st of his senior career, shooting a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory in the BellSouth Senior Classic in Nashville, Tenn.

The 55-year-old Morgan, a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, moved into seventh place on the Senior PGA Tour victory list with his first win since The Instinet Classic a year ago.

Bruce Fleisher (69), Mike McCullough (68) and Dana Quigley (69) tied for second. Leonard Thompson (67) and Monday qualifier Morris Hatalsky (69) finished four strokes back, and Rodger Davis (67), Bobby Wadkins (68), Butch Sheehan (69) and Fuzzy Zoeller (72) were five shots behind Morgan.

Lori West three-putted the final three holes of regulation in losing a two-stroke lead, then made a 3-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the Hy-Vee Classic in Johnston, Iowa.

The victory in the senior event was the first professional win for the 46-year-old West, who has played the LPGA Tour since 1984.

West finished with a 2-under 70 to join Patty Sheehan (71), Jan Stephenson (70) and Elaine Crosby (68) at 4-under 140 after 36 holes.

Tennis

Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt won his third consecutive Queen's Club grass-court championship after overcoming Tim Henman 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in London.

Top-seeded Jelena Dokic won her first title on grass when she beat sixth-seeded Anastasia Myskina 6-2, 6-3 in the DFS Classic final in Birmingham, England. It was Dokic's fifth career title overall.

Anna Smashnova beat defending champion Iroda Tulyaganova 6-4, 6-1 to win the Wien Energie Grand Prix in Vienna, Austria.
