The Rev. Bob Hill Jr. of McClure, Ill., has started new church in Cape Girardeau; it is American Heritage Baptist Church, and services are being held in Arena Park; Hill, 1980 graduate of Shawnee High School, received bachelor of arts degree in pastoral theology from Tri State Baptist College in Charleston, W.Va.

Lieutenant Commander Donald R. Taylor, native of Grand Chain, Ill., is new commanding officer of Naval Reserve Training Center in Cape Girardeau; Taylor relieved Lt. Cmdr. Jack F. Dalrymple during change-of-command ceremony yesterday at center.

Cape Rock Village residents, whose sewer service is provided by SLR Development Co., face higher service charges as result of action by Missouri Public Service Commission; commission has granted SLR partial increase in rates it had requested; company had asked for double present rate, from $5 to $10 per month for single-family dwellings and $3 to $6 for multiple-family dwellings.

City starts wheels turning to take adult book and film store, Cape News, to court under state's obscenity statute with serving of notice to store's owner of Circuit Court hearing set for Thursday; sheriff's deputies and Cape Girardeau police officers deliver hearing notice to owner Phillip Holt.

50 years ago: June 28, 1952

Summer's first heat wave set new record in Cape Girardeau yesterday as temperature soared to official 101-degree reading; previous high reached on three occasions was 100 degrees; and, as is usually case, it was even hotter in Jackson, where mercury topped out at 102 degrees; water consumption in Cape Girardeau continues at high rate; yesterday's use was at 2,700,000 gallons.

In four coordinated actions taking about two minutes to complete, Cape Girardeau will convert at midnight from manual type of telephone operation to new $1,180,000 dial system; Mayor Manning P. Greer will make first call over new dial system.

75 years ago: June 28, 1927

Bank of Southeast Missouri is to be Cape Girardeau's newest financial institution, according to announcement made by A.L. Harty, president of Southeast Missouri Trust Co.; new bank is to be strictly a commercial institution, with capital stock of $100,000 and paid-in surplus of $100,000, owning no real estate, having no farm mortgages or loans, government securities, etc.

Benton - Golf course and tennis court are to be laid out by Benton Lions Club, organization members have decided; use of facilities won't be limited to members of club, it is stated, should others desire to use links or court.
