Last year: South Africa's Retief Goosen followed his U.S. Open triumph with a victory in the British Open warmup event, beating Thomas Bjorn by three strokes.

Last week: New Zealand's Michael Campbell won the European Open in Ireland, holding off Goosen, Padraig Harrington, Paul Lawrie and Bradley Dredge by a stroke. Campbell bogeyed the final four holes.

Notes: The British Open is next week at Muirfield. ... Goosen and 2000 winner Ernie Els top the field with fellow Loch Lomond winners Bjorn, Tom Lehman, Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood. Nick Faldo and Jose Maria Olazabal also are entered along with U.S. players Stewart Cink, Brad Faxon, Matt Kuchar and Jeff Maggert. ... The tournament ends the race for British Open spots through a special eight-week money list. The top seven and ties not otherwise exempt, limited to 25th place and better, will earn spots. After those qualifiers have been determined, the top eight in the Scottish Open who are not otherwise exempt will receive berths at Muirfield. ... Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish designed the Loch Lomond course.

SENIOR PGA TOURFORD PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

Last year: Allen Doyle won his second senior major title, beating Doug Tewell with a par on the first hole of a playoff. Doyle made a 35-foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation.

Last week: Tom Jenkins won the AT&T Canada Senior Open for the second time in three years, shooting 63-68-64 for a three-stroke victory over Walter Morgan, Morris Hatalsky and Bruce Lietzke

Notes: The tournament is the final senior major of the year. Jim Thorpe won The Tradition, Fuzzy Zoeller took the Senior PGA, and Don Pooley won the U.S. Senior Open. ... Jack Nicklaus, forced to withdraw from the U.S. Senior Open because of a recurring back problem, is in the field. The 62-year-old Nicklaus won the 1990 tournament with a senior tour-record 27-under 261 total at Dearborn Country Club. He designed the TPC of Michigan.

Last year: Shigeki Maruyama became the first Japanese player to win a PGA Tour event on the mainland, beating Charles Howell III on the first hole of a playoff.

Last week: Jerry Kelly won the Western Open for his second victory of the year, finishing with a 7-under 65 to beat Davis Love III by two strokes.

Notes: Scott Hoch, the 1995 and 1997 winner, is the top-ranked player in the field at No. 27. Maruyama is 28th and Kelly 29th. ... Kelly lives in Madison, where he was a high school hockey player. ... Loren Roberts won in 1996 and 2000, setting tournament records in 2000 with a 24-under 260 total and an eight-stroke margin of victory. ... The B.C. Open is next week, opposite the British Open.

JAMIE FARR KROGER CLASSIC

Purse: $1 million. Winner's share: $150,000.

Television: ESPN (Friday, noon-2 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 3-5 p.m.).

Last year: South Korea's Se Ri Pak won the event for the third time in four years, beating Sweden's Maria Hjorth by two strokes.

Last week: Juli Inkster won the U.S. Women's Open at Prairie Dunes, matching the lowest final-round score by a champion with a 4-under 66 for a two-stroke victory over Annika Sorenstam. The 42-year-old Inkster, also the 1980 U.S. Women's Amateur winner at Prairie Dunes, has seven major titles.

Notes: Inkster and Sorenstam are skipping the tournament. Sorenstam won in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999 at Forest Hills Country Club. ... Karrie Webb is in the field after missing the cut last week in her bid for a third straight U.S. Women's Open title. ... The tour will remain in Ohio next week for the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic in Vienna.

Last week: Cliff Kresge won the Hershey Open for his second playoff victory of the year, beating Joel Kribel and Steve Ford on the third extra hole. Brian Claar was eliminated on the second playoff hole.

Notes: Rollins and Patrick Moore are a victory away from immediate promotion to the PGA Tour. ... The Fort Smith Classic is next week in Arkansas, followed by an event inSpringfield, Mo.
