Memphis racers big winners in ATPR sprints

BENTON, Mo. -- Jason Sides led Mike Ward for all 25 laps and the two Memphis, Tenn., racers finished first and second in Saturday's sprint feature race at Auto Tire and Parts Racepark.

Ward, the pole-sitter, made several attempts to take the lead, but could never get past Sides. Jason Evans of Sikeston, Mo., was third.

Chris Hall2 of Sikeston took over when leader Terry Johnson dropped out then, led the final 13 laps to win his fourth modified feature of the season. Jeff Parmer of Fenton, Mo., was second and John Barnett of Sikeston third.

Jason Mueller of Perryville, Mo., won for the first time in the pure street division. He led all 15 laps and left Dietrich Bollinger of Benton second and Jeff Beeson of Benton third.

Garrett Moll and Wesley Short of Scott City, Mo., teamed for the cruiser division win. Tim Borgfield and Al Besher of Cape Girardeau were second.

Joints in Motion holds kickoff tonight

Joints in Motion will hold its kickoff for the fund-raising Honolulu Marathon 6:30 p.m. today at Cape Girardeau Public Library.

The marathon, to be held Dec. 8 in Hawaii, is the first of two being put on by the Arthritis Foundation. The Disney World Marathon, which will have a kickoff on Aug. 20, will be Jan. 12 in Orlando, Fla.

Anyone interested in running, or supporting participants, in either marathon should attend the local kickoffs, sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Chapter for Arthritis Foundation.

Austin signs to play baseball at Lindenwood

Recent Jackson High School graduate Bryan Austin has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo.

Austin played shortstop for Jackson, which won the Class 4A, District 1 championship in the 2002 season. In addition to providing sure-handed defense, he batted .351 with 15 RBIs. Austin was a three-year letterman for the Indians.

He was also Jackson's starting quarterback in football, helping the Indians to a perfect 10-0 regular season. Jackson reached the Class 5A semifinals for the first time in school history.

Stoverink, Burford among horseshoe winners

Cori Stoverink and Larry Burford won Sunday's event for the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association at Scott City Park. Tyler Elfrink and Danny Williams were second. Edgar Stoverink and Dan Elfrink were third.

At Glenallen on Saturday, Tyler Elfrink and Danny Williams took the win over Dylan Elfrink and Martin Williams. Third was Larry Burford and Melody Williams.
