Area Wide United Way has expanded its area to include Scott City, in addition to Cape Girardeau and Jackson for coming year; at meeting yesterday, officials with United Way also announced campaign goal of $477,000, and two new agencies, Civil Air Patrol and VIP Industries, will receive funds from campaign, which kicks off Sept. 2.

Bill Stacy, former president of Southeast Missouri State University, feels fortunate to have dodged budget ax; while California budget crisis has prompted funding cuts at other public colleges and universities, emerging California State University at San Marcos has actually seen its budget grow.

25 years ago: Aug. 13, 1977

Former professor and chairman of Department of Educational Administration at University of Hawaii will be new chairman of Department of Education at Southeast Missouri State University; Dr. Robert R. Dunwell, who has also been a department chairman at University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and Hanover College in Hanover, Ind., will succeed Dr. John McAllister.

Group of dissident Teamsters, who are seeking to reform alleged "undemocratic" practices within their union, holds informational meeting here; however, meeting suffers from low attendance, with only about 20 union members present.

50 years ago: Aug. 13, 1952

Jubilant Cape Girardeau County farmers, their fields muddy for first time in months after Monday's drought-breaking rain, are making plans for fall pastures and counting benefit to those pastures and corn fields which weren't burned out by summer's super heat; there's no doubt rain was life-saver to area farm families.

Hip-booted searchers yesterday afternoon found body of man who drowned 13 hours earlier trying to escape from bus in flash flood on Highway 61 south of Ancell; body was identified as that of the Rev. M.H. Thompson, minister of Sikeston.

75 years ago: Aug. 13, 1927

Horticulture tour, arranged by County Agent T.M. Keyser, was concluded yesterday with visit to M.S. Henderson and M.E. Leming orchards near Jackson; at Henderson orchard, members of party found fair-sized crop of early apples, of Bononi and Wealthy type, which are bringing fancy prices; Leming orchard, now in its fifth year, includes 60 acres.

J.B. Schneider, formerly resident and business man of Cape Girardeau, died at his home in New Harmony, Ind., yesterday, and body will be returned to Cape Girardeau tomorrow for burial; Schneider, 80, was drummer boy in Union Army during Civil War; he was a tinsmith; Schneider is survived by his widow, former Mrs. Amanda Anderson, and son, Dr. J.J. Schneider of Cape Girardeau, as well as two brothers, one sister and three grandchildren.
