Winter of 1991-92 was warmest here in 47 years; it appears summer of 1992 might go down as one of coolest on record in Cape Girardeau; average temperature for first 12 days of August was 2.5 degrees below average for period.

Governor John Ashcroft has appointed state officials to work with Regional Commerce and Growth Association to direct efforts of Tri-State Commission, regional economic development group; Garry Taylor, deputy director of economic development, and Cathy Cote, project manager of Missouri Department of Economic Development, will represent Jefferson City in commission; board is offshoot of Tri-State Coalition, which was formed to promote issues of mutual importance to Western Kentucky, Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri.

25 years ago: Aug. 14, 1977

New associate pastor at St. Mary's Cathedral is the Rev. Edward P. Nichols Jr.; he comes to Cape Girardeau from Springfield, where he had served as associate pastor at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and part-time associate chaplain at St. John's Hospital; Nichols was ordained a priest in 1975.

After year's delay in construction, new State School for Handicapped located off South Boulevard should be open in early October; work began in October 1976 by Sides Construction Co.; new road to 18-acre site from off Boulevard is soon to be put in by Drury Development Co., which owns acreage and sold site to state.

50 years ago: Aug. 14, 1952

Pvt. Gerald Sides, 22, is hospitalized in Pusan, Korea, recovering from wounds inflicted by enemy-thrown grenade; he was wounded on July 20 while in action on front line in Korea; Sides was reared in Fruitland and from there moved with his family to St. Louis, where he attended school; he is son of Claude Sides of Cape Girardeau and Mrs. Eula Sides of St. Louis.

Ten percent across-the-board pay increase for all city employees with provisions for higher rates for those in positions of responsibility is authorized by city council; it is estimated increase will cost city $30,000 annually when vacancies in departments are filled.

75 years ago: Aug. 14, 1927

H.A. Voll, who has been selected as teacher in Lutheran parochial school, has arrived here to confer with church and school officials for term which opens in September; he succeeds P.A. Czamanski, who is attending Valparaiso University.

The Rev. O.L. Smith speaks at Courthouse Park union service in evening; meeting begins with number of songs by Billy Sunday Community Chorus; choir from Christian Church also sings as part of program.
