Southeast Missouri State University reports 195 fewer students enrolled this year compared to last year and blames higher admission standards and economy for drop; number of full and part-time students attending university this fall stands at 8,185, according to Fred Snider, dean of enrollment.

Jackson - Citizens Facility Advisory Committee has recommended Jackson School District consider building middle school to relieve overcrowding at R.O. Hawkins Junior High School and West Lane Elementary School; committee, appointed earlier this year by school board, presented its final report to board at its Monday meeting.

State Rep. Marvin E. Proffer, D-Jackson, joins with more than 90 other members of Missouri House of Representatives in signing letter to U.S. Sens. Thomas F. Eagleton and John C. Danforth opposing ratification of proposed Panama Canal treaty; proposed treaty would eventually return control of canal to Panama.

Coinciding with start of school are first visual indications that time for opening of SEMO District Fair is nearing; many man-hours of work already have gone into preparations for annual fall exhibition, but it isn't until start of activity at Arena Park fairgrounds that people begin to get excited about fair; event will open Sept. 13.

50 years ago: Aug. 26, 1952

A 200-mile tour of Southeast Missouri cotton counties on Friday, sponsored by Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, is expected to be feature event of summer training conference and annual meeting of Missouri Soil District Supervisors gathering in Cape Girardeau Thursday to Sunday; about 100 people are expected to take part in tour.

Juden School No. 2 and land on which it is located will be put up for sale soon by school board; building and ground became Cape Girardeau school property in 1947, when extension of city limits included area; building is no longer used, and school board has decided to sell tract of land, fronting 400 feet on Vincent avenue, by 120 feet on Country Club drive.

75 years ago: Aug. 26, 1927

Enrollment of students at Central High School will begin Monday, says principal R.L. Davidson; this, however, won't be required of students who already have selected their subjects for this year under new plan inaugurated at close of last school year; this group will receive their class schedules from their home-room teachers on opening day of classes, Sept. 6.

Professor J.H. Gehrs of agricultural faculty of Teachers College returned yesterday from 4,300-mile automobile tour of the South, East and Canada, accompanied by his son and daughter, Milton and Pearl, and Lela Ford.
