Southeast soccer team rolls past Belmont 8-0

Southeast Missouri State University's women's soccer team completed a successful opening weekend of play Sunday with an 8-0 romp past Belmont at Houck Stadium.

The Otahkians finished the Southeast Labor Day Tournament with a 2-0 record, having beaten Indiana State 2-0 in Friday's season opener.

Sophomore forward Diana Poovey scored three of the Otahkians' eight goals and Lisa Schweppe added two. Heather Reding, Erika Todd and Jen Cross all had one goal.

Poovey, Todd, Cross, Marla Gianino and Megan Hejlek contributed assists.

Southeast outshot Belmont 38-8. Otahkian goalkeepers Amanda Wrzos and Lauren Fabbro each made one save as they both played a half.

Murray State also went 2-0 in the tournament after Sunday's 3-2 overtime win over Indiana State, which went 0-2, as did Belmont.

The Otahkians return to action Friday as they play at Arkansas.

Southeast punter nabs OVC's weekly honor

Southeast punter Andrew Winters was honored as the Ohio Valley Conference's special teams player of the week Monday.

Winters, a freshman from Australia, averaged 40 yards on four punts in the first football game he ever played in, a 42-41 double-overtime win over Arkansas-Monticello Thursday night.

Eastern Illinois' is the OVC offensive player of the week. He had 335 all-purpose yards in Saturday's 61-36 loss to Hawaii, including 14 receptions for 128 yards and 156 yards on kickoff returns.

Eastern Kentucky's Marcus Adams won the league's defensive honor. He had three tackles, including a sack, in Thursday's 49-10 loss to Oregon State.

Southeast volleyball player gains honor

Even though Southeast's volleyball team went 0-3 last weekend during the season-opening Southwest Missouri State Tournament, junior Suzanne Gundlach earned a spot on the seven-player all-tournament squad.

Arkansas won the four-team event with a 3-0 record. Host SMS went 2-1 and Utah State was 1-2.
