Cape Girardeau Notre Dame defeated Dexter 15-5, 7-15, 15-11 on Saturday to place third in its own Volleyballfest.

Earlier in the day, St. Louis Notre Dame handed Cape Notre Dame its first loss of the season, a 9-15, 12-15 setback in the semifinals.

Duchesne, the Pool B champion, defeated St. Louis Notre Dame in the championship game in straight sets to win the eight-team tournament.

Cape Notre Dame, which went 3-0 in winning Pool A, is now 4-1 overall.

In Saturday's matches, Erin Pfau led Cape Notre Dame with 10 kills and 15 digs. Sommer McCauley added 39 assists, five kills, eight digs and 17 service points; Vallare Rutherford had eight kills and 11 blocks; and Emily Buerhle had 21 service points, including five aces.

Notre Dame's JV reached the championship game of the junior-varsity tournament, but fell to St. Louis Notre Dame 15-6, 9-15, 8-15.

Eagle Ridge places second

HILLSBORO, Mo. -- Eagle Ridge Christian took second in a five-team round-robin tournament.

Eagle Ridge defeated North County Christian School (21-17, 26-24), split with Southern Missouri Christian (21-13, 12-21) and Gateway Academy (21-16, 19-21) and lost both games to Christian Outreach School (20-22, 16-21).

Rachel Carbaugh had six kills against North County Christian and four apiece against Christian Outreach and Gateway Academy. Chelsea Clark had six service points against North County, while Cara Ervin had four kills against Southern Missouri.

Cross country

JACKSON, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau Central's freshman boys won their division to turn in the top performance among area schools at the Jackson Invitational at Jackson City Park.

Daniel Austin (11:13) and John Kipper (11:26) supplied a 1-2 finish for the Tigers on the 1.95-mile layout. Bryan Schott (8th, 11:41) and J.D. Mungle (20th, 12:11) rounded out Central's winning total of 31 points, which was well ahead of runnerup Herculaneum (51).

Jennifer Pancoast gave the Tigers another first-place finish as she won the girls' sophomore division in 15:37 (2.35 miles).

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame Softballfest

In a battle of Notre Dames it was St. Louis Notre Dame taking the championship 4-2 behind the arm of ace Sara Dooley.

Lindsay Reinagel (5-1) went the distance for Cape, allowing eight hits, walking none and striking out seven. Sara Berkbigler chipped in with an RBI triple for the Bulldogs.

Cape Notre Dame fell to 6-1; St. Louis Notre Dame improved to 9-0.

In other Softballfest action, Sikeston defeated St. Vincent 15-3 in the seventh place game. St. Vincent could only muster two hits off winning pitcher Jessica Owens. Liz Kasten suffered the loss for St. Vincent.

In the fifth-place game, Poplar Bluff defeated Ste. Genevieve 5-3, while St. Pius cruised past Park Hills Central 9-0 in the third-place game.

SOCCER

Notre Dame Soccerfest

In a championship game dominated by defense, Carbondale (Ill.) came out on top 1-0 with a Ross Gray free-kick goal late in the second half to defeat host Notre Dame.

Despite few good offensive chances, Carbondale was able to crack the scoreboard after their free-kick deflected off of a wall of Bulldog defenders and went in with 15 minutes left in the game.

"It was a great game," Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn said. "Defensively we played very well."

In the third place game, Central met Jackson for the second time in a week and came away with its second shutout. The Tigers defeated the Indians 4-0.

Central (3-1) got goals from Heath Orr, Drew Crist, Chad Proffer and Matt Hellrich. Grant Hengst, Whit Lynn and Chris Limbaugh provided assists. Aaron Meystedt recorded the shutout in goal.

In other Soccerfest action, St. Pius beat Poplar Bluff 2-1 for fifth place, and Marion defeated Sikeston 6-2 for seventh.

BASEBALL

Woodland splits pair

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Luke Johnson belted a grand slam as Woodland edged Arcadia Valley 11-10.

Johnson, who also had a double, finished 2-for-4. Kent McCormick added three hits while Alex VanGennip had two as the Cardinals had 12 hits overall. Anthony Grojean (2-0) picked up the win for Woodland (2-1).

Earlier in the day, Woodland suffered a 13-2, five-inning loss to West County. Johnson (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cardinals. He also accounted for one of Woodland's four hits with a double.

FRESHMAN FOOTBALL

Central 33, Vianney 13

ST. LOUIS -- Kingsley Ehie rushed for five touchdowns as the Tigers opened their season with a win.

The Tigers turned in three interceptions -- two by Scott Dunaway and one by Anthony Hempstead.
