The official college golf season is held in the spring, but Southeast Missouri State University coach Carroll Williams puts plenty of stock in his team's fall schedule.

"You try to get in the habit of playing well and it gives everybody a chance to play," Williams said. "I think it's important to kind of set the tone for the spring."

Southeast's fall schedule kicks off today with the Indians' annual tournament. The 12-team Dr. Morton B. Harris Intercollegiate at the Cape Girardeau Country Club will feature 36 holes beginning at 8 a.m. today and 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Along with Southeast, teams entered are fellow Ohio Valley Conference squads Eastern Illinois, Morehead State, Murray State, Tennessee-Martin and Tennessee Tech, along with Evansville, Lewis, Missouri-Kansas City, Southern Illinois, Saint Louis and Western Illinois.

The Indians' five-player lineup for the tournament is comprised fully of returning squad members, led by Jimmy Blose, who was second in last year's OVC Tournament. Blose qualified in Southeast's No. 1 spot.

Rounding out Southeast's lineup, in order of the way they qualified, are Matt Hillis, Woody Hill, Kent Phillips and Brian Sheehan. Phillips is a Cape Girardeau Central High School product.

The tournament is named in memory of Dr. Morton B. Harris, who played on Southeast's 1943 NAIA national championship basketball team. The event is sponsored by his son, Steve Harris, who played golf at Southeast in the early 1970s and was coached by Williams.
