JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Over a five-week period, Republican Otto Bean Jr. raised nearly $23,500 in his bid for the 163rd District seat in the House of Representatives.

Bean's fund-raising success in such a short time span is almost unheard of for a state representative candidate, especially considering that Dunklin County, which is at the district's heart, hasn't sent a Republican to the House in at least 74 years.

From July 26 through Aug. 31, the period covered by the latest campaign finance disclosure reports filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission, Bean collected $23,495. Prior to this reporting cycle, Bean had raised just $4,348 since filing for election in March.

Bean, of Holcomb, spent $3,938.94 during the most recent period and was left with $22,393.24 on hand -- nearly three times the amount reported by his opponent in the Nov. 5 election.

Democrat Brent Robinson of Kennett had $7,636.18 in the bank as of Aug. 31.

He raised $4,823 and spent $4,132.16 during the latest reporting period.

Six donors gave Robinson $300, the maximum individual contribution for a House race. Among them were House Speaker Pro Tem Mark Abel, D-Festus, and a St. Louis electrical worker's union.

Bean had 41 donations for the maximum. Top-dollar contributors of note included Senate President Pro Tem Peter Kinder, R-Cape Girardeau; state Sen. Bill Foster, R-Poplar Bluff; House Minority Floor Leader Catherine Hanaway, R-Warson Woods; and Lloyd Smith of Sikeston, manager of Republican Jim Talent's U.S. Senate campaign and former chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau.

In addition to most of Dunklin County, the 163rd District also includes parts of Butler and Stoddard counties.
