Notre Dame's volleyball team got off to slow start Monday night but eventually cruised past Scott City 15-7, 15-8, in the Bulldogs' first match since finishing second in the B.A. Sports Classic over the weekend.

Scott City hung tight in the first set, keeping the score close at 8-6, before Notre Dame rallied to score seven of the last eight points.

Notre Dame continued to rally into the second set, which was a set of streaks. The Bulldogs got it started on an 8-0 run before the Rams staged a 4-0 run. Notre Dame held its ground and responded by scoring five straight points, and Scott City countered that by scoring the next four points.

With the game at 13-8, Notre Dame ended the set by scoring the final two points and knocking the Rams out in two sets.

"We missed a ton of serves," Scott City coach Laura Ort said. "We couldn't capitalize on Notre Dame's mistakes, either."

Amanda Dirnberger led the Bulldogs with five kills and nine digs.

"Coming off the tournament, we knew Scott City would be pumped up for this game," Dirnberger said. "We certainly didn't overlook it. We knew we had to be ready to play.

"We came out a little shaky and it took us a while to get warmed up, but we came together and started playing good volleyball."

Emily Buerhle also contributed five kills and Kristen Boos added nine digs. Sommer McCauley and Kristen Vangennip distributed 17 assists between them.

"Scott City is a pretty big rival for us, but everyone on the team responded and played well," Notre Dame coach Tara Stroup said. "Every girl got to play and every girl contributed one way or another."

Notre Dame improved to 14-2-1 under its first-year coach. Scott City is 11-4-2.
