Three wagon trains manned by troubled youths from East Coast are traveling through Southeast Missouri as part of journey through eastern united States; wagon trains are part of VisionQuest, private corporation founded in 1973 to help young people; first and smallest of trains stopped Monday at North Elementary School in Fruitland.
Saying he didn't want city's tourism fund depleted further, Councilman Al Spradling III yesterday spurned Convention and Visitors Advisory Board request for additional money; CVB asked council for additional $50,000, to be set aside in "contingency fund" to help finance various events and activities throughout year.

Applause and chants of "open house" came from crowd of about 300 students gathered yesterday afternoon in front of Academic Hall on Southeast Missouri State University to protest visitation regulations in university's dormitories; Dr. Robert E. Leestamper, university president, didn't back away from his position and indicated stricter policy might be adopted.
The Rev. Joseph E. Gosche was installed as pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral last night by the Most Rev. Bernard F. Law, bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese; Gosche has been in residence at St. Mary's since Aug. 1.
50 years ago: Sept. 22, 1952
Captain Narvol A. Randol announces he has submitted his resignation as member of city's Civil Service Commission which, while authorized by municipal ordinance, was never fully implemented and has never functioned; Randol, on regimental staff of National Guard, says as far as he knows, second member of two-member body has never been appointed.
State College President W.W. Parker urges students not to retaliate to vandalism done on campus, apparently by zealous band of Southern Illinois University supporters; at least four places on campus were whitewashed, one spot with words, "S.I.U. beat Cape"; Indians will play Carbondale school next Saturday.
75 years ago: Sept. 22, 1927
Steel for Cape Girardeau traffic bridge is arriving and within few days residents will see more visible portions of super-structure being put in place; heretofore, practically all work, with exception of construction of Morgan Oak street approach, has been where visitors at bridge site couldn't view it.
Conference of school officials of Southeast Missouri will be held at New Madrid Oct. 3 to devise methods of securing money to aid schools in flooded areas of district; meeting was called by Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Lee, following investigation by his department show that number of schools will have only short terms because of lack of funds, caused principally by flood conditions of last spring.
