Former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole will be in Stoddard County, Mo., this weekend campaigning for GOP candidates.

Dole will be the guest of U.S. Senate candidate Jim Talent at a fund-raising luncheon and at the Stars and Stripes Museum and Library on Saturday.

The luncheon will be held at the Hickory Log Restaurant in Dexter beginning at 11:30 a.m. Dole's visit to the museum, located south of Bloomfield, is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Talent is in a race for the Senate against Democrat Jean Carnahan.

Chairman of the World War II Memorial Campaign, counsel to one of Washington's top law firms and author of two best-selling books on political humor, Dole is part of the American landscape.

Dole was the GOP candidate for the White House in 1996. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton as a tribute to his character and contributions to the nation.

Former Senate leader

Dole was raised on the plains of western Kansas. In addition to becoming the Senate majority leader and candidate for president, he also served as chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee.

During World War II, he was a platoon leader in the legendary 10th Mountain Division in Italy. In 1945, he was gravely wounded on the battlefield and was twice decorated for heroic achievement. His decorations include two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster.

Dole will be making the two stops in Stoddard County for Talent, as well as an additional Talent campaign appearance in St. Louis on Saturday.
