In one of the most thrilling area softball matchups of the year, Notre Dame outlasted visiting Kelly 2-1 in nine innings in a classic pitcher's duel Monday.

The Bulldogs improved to 15-5 while the Hawks fell to 12-4.

Alana Weissmueller of Notre Dame broke up Dana Essner's perfect game in the bottom of the seventh inning with an infield single and reached second on a throwing error. Weissmueller then scored on a game-tying single by Whitney Ostendorf.

Weismueller once again reached on a sinlge in the bottom of the ninth. After Weismueller stole second with two outs, Stacey Schwartz got the game-winning single.

Both pitchers went the full nine innings. Winner Lindsay Reinagel finished with five strikeouts and one walk, while allowing five hits. Essner struck out six, walked none and allowed five hits.

The teams will hook up again Wednesday in a makeup game at Kelly.

Central 6, Ste. Genevieve 1

Central (17-5) got a strong pitching performance from Laura Beard and a record-setting relief performance by Megan McDonald to cruise past Ste. Genevieve on the road.

Beard pitched five innings, allowing five hits and one run. McDonald pitched two hitless innings, striking out four.

McDonald, who now has 139 strikeouts, broke Central's single-season strikeout record, the previous mark being 135.

Central's offensive stars were Beard, who went 3-4 with two runs batted in, and Alex Wieser, who had an inside-the-park home run.

Central is coming off of a fifth-place finish at the Jackson Tournament over the weekend. Central defeated Nerinx Hall, Lutheran South and Cape Girardeau Notre Dame in the fifth-place game. The Tigers' only loss came to powerhouse St. Louis Notre Dame.

Delta 5, Clearwater 4

Delta (4-11) took advantage of several Clearwater miscues and slipped away with a home win on Andrea Dohogne's game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sarah Cook picked up her second win of the season, striking out three and scattering seven hits. Ashley Elliot was the offensive star with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

BOYS' SOCCER

Notre Dame 3, Marion (Ill.) 1

Notre Dame (6-3) got an early goal from Tyler Cuba and never looked back in rout to a convincing road victory.

Blake Fisher and Adam Prasanphanich picked up the other goals for Notre Dame. Blake Urhahn and Dustin Houpt recorded assists. Fisher scored the game's most thrilling goal on a header off a long free kick.

Notre Dame's JV (5-0-1) stayed undefeated with a 3-0 win. Frankie Ellis scored a hat trick to account for all the scoring. Will Lindman and Tim Frank picked up assists.

Poplar Bluff 3, Jackson 1

Jackson (3-7-1) entered halftime down by a goal but could not put anything together in the second half and suffered a road loss.

Tyler Beussink scored the lone goal for Jackson. Mark Bandille had the assist.

Jackson's JV won 2-1. Cameron Keller and Chris Kraust had the goals.

VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame 15-15

Park Hills Central 12-2

Notre Dame (22-4-1) looked strong in a two-game victory at home.

Erin Pfau led the way with five kills, eight service points and five digs. Sommer McCauley added 10 assists, four kills and seven service points. Ali Tyson had nine assists, two kills and five digs.

Notre Dame was coming off of a second-place finish at the Arkansas State Tournament over the weekend. The Bulldogs won their pool and forced heavily-favored Jonesboro, Ark., to three games in the final.

Notre Dame's JV won in two games.

Farmington 15-15

Jackson 9-11

Jackson (16-2-2) suffered only its second loss of the season as the Indians fell on the road.

Jessie Koeper led the Indians with 16 kills and 11 digs. Jennifer Mesey added eight kills, Courtney Vance recorded 13 assists and Molly Hartmann contributed four blocks.

Jackson lost the JV match 15-10, 15-12 but won the freshmen contest 19-17, 10-15, 15-12.

Scott City 10-15-15

Sikeston 15-11-6

Scott City (15-4-2) came out on top in a hard-fought match on the road.

Sidney Baer had seven kills to lead the way. Megan Ressel added four kills and 11 assists. Shana Wadlington had six kills, three aces and two blocks.

Scott City's JV won 15-11, 15-5.

Bell City 15-15

Central 4-5

Bell City (14-4) routed host Central behind nine kills and nine service points from Katie Niemczyk.

Whitney Abner recorded 15 assist, Sarah Scherer and Katie Goodman both had seven digs and Erin Disler added four blocks.

Bell City won the JV match 15-4, 16-4

Advance 15-15

Dexter 12-7

Dana Williams had a big night with 12 kills, four blocks and six digs to help the Hornets beat visiting Dexter.

Advance (14-4-1) was coming off of a fifth-place finish at the Arkansas State Tournament over the weekend, where the Hornets went 4-1.

Nicole Tropf also had a big night for Advance with seven kills, three blocks and five aces. Leslie Rainey and Alicia Broshuis chipped in seven assists apiece.

Advance's JV lost 15-2, 15-2.

Perryville 10-15-15

Fredericktown 15-8-10

Perryville (5-13-3) rallied for a home victory.

Stephanie Landholt had 14 service points and eight digs for the Pirates. Lisa Pecaut recorded eight points and 24 assists; Kaci Schremp added seven points, five kills and 14 digs; Casey Moll had six kills and 12 digs; and Alissa Moeckel contributed six kills and 12 digs,

Perryville's JV won 15-8, 15-6.

Valle 15-15

St. Vincent 1-12

St. Vincent (9-10-2) fell below .500 with a road loss.

Chelsey Brown had six service points for St. Vincent. Danielle Schremp added three kills, Dani Emmendorfer led the team in assists with six and Sierra Paulus had two blocks.

St. Vincent's JV lost 15-12, 15-10.

GIRLS' TENNIS

Jackson 7, Carbondale 2

Jackson (6-6) evened its record in dual matches by winning at home.

Katie Domian, Kelly Mitchell, Kim Anderson, Lauren Everett and Carrie Golden all notched singled victories, while the doubles teams of Domian-Everett and Anderson-Kari Miinch also prevailed.

Chaffee 8, Malden 1

Chaffee (3-7) scored a convincing road win in preparation for next week's district play.

Kate Pfefferkorn, Brittney Bennett, Nicole Poe, Shannon Hampton and Shelby Rice scored singles wins. The doubles teams of Pfefferkorn-Bennett, Poe-Hampton and Casey Guzman-Rice also won.
