Local resident elected to state library association

Sarah Cron of Cape Girardeau, dean of Academic Information Services at Southeast Missouri State University, was recently elected as a member-at-large of the Missouri Library Association during the group's annual conference in downtown Kansas City.

County Farm Bureau evaluates resolutions

A special meeting of the Cape County Farm Bureau was held recently to go over resolutions. Issues ranged from fencing laws to school bonds. The results of this meeting will be sent to the State Annual Meeting, where they will be used to set the policies of the Missouri Farm Bureau.

Those who attended the meeting were Tom Sachse, president; Chris Haertling, vice-president; Shirley Aufdenberg, secretary; Betty Rampley, treasurer; Marty Scholl, office secretary; and board members Mary Gray, Jeff Gholson, Vernon Miller, Ken Englehart, Bob Nitsch and Paul Dirnberger Jr.

Emerson's mobile office to hit the road

The mobile office of U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., will be hitting the road again this month.

The office will be at the courthouse in Benton today from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. today. It will then be at the Heritage House in Sikeston from 10 to 11 a.m. today. On Thursday, it will stop at the city hall in Advance from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., at the city hall in Oran from 2 to 3 p.m. and at the city hall in Chaffee from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Candidate forum to be held in Perryville

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The public is invited to a candidate forum at 6:30 p.m. today at the Perry Park Center Theater in Perryville. State representative candidates in both the 106th and 157th districts, including Democrat Dennis Smith, Republican Kevin Engler, Independent Elbert Bohnert, Democrat Chuck Miller, Republican Scott Lipke and Libertarian Timothy Doubledee, will be featured at the event.

The forum is being planned and conducted by the Perry County Teen Council, a group formed by 4-H and the Perryville Chamber of Commerce. The candidate forum is being sponsored by the Republic-Monitor newspaper.

Council members are seeking input from the community in formulating questions of public interest. Suggestions for questions may be submitted by e-mail to tcouncilforum@hotmail.com.

Class of 1993 holding reunion planning meeting

The Cape Central High School class of 1993 is holding a reunion planning meeting from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Capaha Park, Shelter 2. Organizers ask anyone interested to come and help gather addresses.

An informal meeting of the Cape Girardeau Genealogy Society will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Regional Library, 204 South Union in Jackson. It will be an open forum concentrating on research, with board members present to assist novices. The Genealogy Research Room in the library is available to be used by the public at any time during regular library hours.

Sophomore nominated for homecoming queen

A.J. Bedwell of Scott City was recently nominated by Delta Tau Delta as a candidate in the contest for University of Missouri-Rolla Homecoming Queen. Bedwell, a sophomore studying biological sciences, was one of 20 students from Missouri nominated. Other states represented included Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, South Carolina and Texas. There were 26 nominees altogether.

Haunted Hall of Horror to be held at Brase Arena

At 410 Kiwanis Drive, deep inside the tunnels of the A.C. Brase Arena, you will find the Haunted Hall of Horror. This year's Haunted House will feature a terrifying maze and will be open from 7 to 11 p.m. this Thursday and Oct. 29, 30 and 31. In addition, the Haunted House will be open from 7 p.m. to midnight this Friday and Saturday. The cost is $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

Disabilities council to hold forum on Tuesday

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Region IX Council on Developmental Disabilities is holding a forum on issues related to developmental disabilities from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sikeston Area Higher Education Center, Room 114, in Sikeston.

Candidates running for a seat in the House of Representatives will be addressing questions prepared by the council. Candidates from nine counties in Southeast Missouri have been invited to participate. Those who have confirmed their attendance are: Lanie Black, R-District 161; Jason Crowell, R-District 158; Rod Jetton, R-District 156; Donnie Kiefer, D-District 160; Rob Mayer, R-District 159; Denny Merideth, D-District 162; and Peter Myers, R-District 160.

Orthodontics program to be presented at library

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dr. David Crowe of Cape Girardeau will present a program on orthodontics at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. "How to Minimize or Eliminate Your Need for an Orthodontist" is billed as an entertaining, lively and informative program for parents with children of all ages and stages of dental health.

Crowe Orthodontics is the library's October Literacy Partner. The Monthly Literacy Partners program is a fund-raising effort by the Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation.

Mental health group providing free workshop

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) of Missouri will provide a free, six-hour workshop on mental illness in Cape Girardeau on Thursday. "Changing with the Times: the emerging role of mental health workers and professionals" will be of special interest to professionals who work closely with children and adults who have a serious mental illness and their families. Topics include family trauma, suicide and psychiatric crisis, the recovery journey, children's disorders and what hurts and what helps.

The workshop starts at 9 a.m. at the Osage Community Centre, with networking time over rolls and coffee beginning at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is provided. The workshop adjourns at 4 p.m. Registration is required, and class size is limited. Call (800) 374-2138 to register or for more information.

Ste. Gen Jour de Fete families to be honored

The honored families for the 2003 Ste. Genevieve Jour de Fete celebration, Baumann and Robert-Politte, are invited to a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ste. Genevieve County Services Building to prepare for next year's event. Each year, Project Pioneers honors a French family (Robert-Politte) and a German family (Baumann) during the annual Jour de Fete celebration.

Sign-up forms may be obtained at the Ozark Regional Library in Ste. Genevieve or by calling Barbara Basler at 883-3134. Efforts are being made to place forms in various other libraries in the area, including Cape Girardeau, Washington County, the Lead Belt and Festus.
