Rams, Eagles among youth league winners

The Rams defeated the 49ers 26-6 and the Eagles beat the Browns 14-0 in weekend Cape Youth Tackle Football games.

In the Rams' win, Jacob Hale, Blake Rhymer, Tyler Brandt and Chris Cottner all scored. In the Eagles' victory, J.C. White scored on two touchdown runs.

Bangert takes fishing title at Lake Wappapello

Derrick Bangert of Jackson won Saturday in the Bass Busters of Southeast Missouri Tournament held on Lake Wappappello.

Bangert located his fish in shallow pockets just off the main river and caught his five-fish limit using a Pop-R top-water lure.

His fish bit all day and was able to cull several of his smaller fish through out the day.

Rodney Enderly of Jackson was second. He caught his fish on a Foutz's one-eighth ounce black buzzbait using it to fish shallow cover through out the lake.

Steve Ramey won big-bass honors with his fish he caught throwing a Mann's Baby One Minus crankbait to shallow cover in the backs of creeks.

Saturday's lake conditions were stable at pool level. Water temperature was in the low 60s. Rain persisted all day with strong winds

-- first from the south then shifting to the north by 11 a.m., accompanied by falling temperatures into the low 40s.

Kirkpatrick wins award in annual skeet shoot

Ted Kirpatrick led the list of winners in the third annual skeet shoot held at Bill Holliday's Rocking H Ranch near Clubb, Mo., an event hosted by state Rep. Rod Jetton.

Kirpatrick won the individual division of the event, which included more than 50 shooters. Kirpatrick won with 45 points using a Remington 12-guage.

Jared Roberts was second (44) using a Benelli Nova 12-guage. Denver Cook was third (43) with a Marine war-print signed by Oliver North.

Team winners were Denver Cook, Ted Kirpatrick, Scott Cook and Daniel Cook. Second was Kara Hutchason, Dick Bangert, John Sarff and Jared Roberts. Third was Devon James, Bart Korman and James Harlan.

Youth shoot winners were Rachel McCain (12-and-over) and Will Jetton (under-12).

Winners in the gun raffle were Allen Twidwell, Jodie Allen, John Carter, Larry Johnson and Greg West.

Area runners post strong runs in Anna biathlon

Several area runners competed in the recent Union County Colorfest Biathlon in Anna, Ill, an event won by Tony Adair of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Bill Logan of Perryville, Mo., finished 11th overall. Sue Burton of Cape Girardeau was 14th overall and first in the women's division.

Garrett Gordon of Cape Girardeau finished 23rd, Dwayne Hadler of Perryville was 31st and Scott Duncan of Cape Girardeau was 41st.

Benton racer wraps up MARS rookie title

Joey Mack of Benton, Mo., profiled in a national racing publication this month, has wrapped up the Rookie of the Year award on the MidAmerica Racing Series, a late model racing series based in Batesville, Ark.

He will receive his award at the group's banquet in December. His chase for the title is the subject of a story in the October issue of Dirt Late Model, a nationally distributed magazine.

Mack pulled away from runner-up Dwaine Hottinger of Russellville, Ark., over the final events to win his first award on the multi-state racing series. He finished in the top five in two events and was in the top 10 seven times. He led Hottinger by 38 points in the standings.

Mack is a former season champion at Missouri International Racepark - now Auto Tire and Parts Racepark -- near Benton.
