University names Patton student to dean's list

Brooks Whitlow of Patton, Mo., was named to the dean's list at Trevecca Nazarene University for the spring 2002 semester.

He is the son of John and Regina Whitlow and a graduate of Meadow Heights High School.

Whitlow, a junior business management major, is actively involved in peer mentoring and is a member of Phi Beta Lambda.

Cape youth achieves eagle scout rank

Chris Griffith, son of Kent and Debbie Griffith of Cape Girardeau recently received the rank of eagle scout through the Boys Scouts of America.

Griffith is a member of Troop Five, sponsored by VFW Post 3838. He has achieved 32 merit badges, served two terms as a patrol leader and is involved in tae kwon do, golf, marching band, wrestling, Beta Club and church activities.

Antill directs production of 'Don't Drink the Water'

Matt Antill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Antill of Chaffee, Mo., recently served as director of Quincy University's production of "Don't Drink the Water."

Antill is a senior music performance major.

Benton youth earns spot in Who's Who publication

Alana Jo Burford of Benton, Mo., has been accepted into Who's Who Among American High School students for the third consecutive year.

She is the daughter of Paul and Marilyn Burford of Benton.

As a senior, Burford played basketball, softball and ran track. She was a member of FBLA, FCCLA, Beta Club and Pep Club.

She now attends Southeast Missouri State University.

Annual law day essay contest entrie sought

The Cape Girardeau Association of the Missouri Education Association will participate in the annual law day essay contest.

Using 700 words or less students in grades 4-12 are invited to use the following prompt: Good citizens help build a great country.

Participants should describe the qualities of a good citizen and identify someone who best exemplifies good citizenship and explain why. At the local level, the Cape Girardeau MNEA prizes are $25 gift certificates to students in grades 4 to 8, and $40 gift certificates to students in grades 9 to 12.

Marching Tigers win second place award

The Cape Central Marching Tigers finished their 2002 contest season with a second place finish at the Park Hills Rebel Invitational Saturday.

The Tigers also won "Outstanding Marching and Outstanding General Effect" awards. This was the first year of a new era for the band, as the freshmen entered Central High School. The band participated in six contests this year, placing in each.

Fredericktown graduate enrolls at Centre College

Lynetta Mier of Fredericktown, Mo., has enrolled this year at Centre College in Danville, Ky.

She is the daughter of Scottie and Rosemarie Mier of Fredericktown and is a graduate of Fredericktown R-1 High School.

Pfanstiel awarded pair of scholarships

Lindsey Pfanstiel of Cape Girardeau has been selected to receive a Presidential Scholarship Award and a Board of Regents Scholarship from Concordia University, Seward, Neb., beginning with the fall semester of the 2002-2003 academic year.

Pfanstiel is the daughter of Barry and Janine Pfanstiel.
