Cardinals thrive under slowed-down game plan

While Woodland isn't in the upper half of the bracket at the seMissourian Christmas Tournament, a strong second-place showing in their own tournament may have served notice that the Cardinals are a threat.

First-year coach Ted Hahn has slowed down the pace on offense, which may not be exciting to watch but has helped provide early wins. The Cardinals have not reached 70 points yet this season.

Seniors Luke Johnson and Alex VanGennip have lived up to expectations and lead the Cardinals in scoring through the first six games. Johnson and VanGennip average in double figures while providing strong leadership for the team.

The Cardinals' biggest problem early in the season has been slow starts. Woodland has played three one-point games, often relying on second-half spurts to get back into the game.

"We're a second-half team," he said. "We don't play those good first halves, but I don't know why."

While the Cardinals may stumble out of the gates, Hahn said with his team's athletic ability they could be a handful for any team they play.

Hahn said he's been happy with the play of his sophomores, especially Cody McCraw and Brandon Cowell, and said their experience on the varsity level now will make this team better down the road.

If his team doesn't succeed, Hahn said it won't be because of lack of effort.

"I think these kids have a lot going for them," he said. "We just have inconsistencies in our game."

The Cardinals will have a test on their hands as they start the tournament with a first-round matchup against Bell City.

Hahn said he's confident his team can compete with Bell City.

"We have the size and athleticism to play them well," he said. "We're going to surprise somebody."

After the Christmas tournament, the Cardinals will get into the meat of their schedule, including the Stoddard County Conference opponents.

"We have the roughest part of our schedule in the second half," he said.
