Small quake hits Southern Illinois

A small earthquake shook far southeastern Illinois on Friday.

The earthquake measuring 2.9 in magnitude was centered about 25 miles north of Harrisburg in Saline County, said Kevin Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky.

The area is close to the Indiana and Kentucky state lines.

There were no reports of property damage, said Mike Davis, a dispatcher with the Saline County sheriff's office.

"We didn't even know anything about it," he said.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake was felt in Evansville and Mount Vernon, Ind. A spokeswoman said the tremor was at a shallow depth.
