Pro-war demonstrators join anti-war counterparts

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The anti-war demonstrators had their pro-attack counterparts vastly outnumbered on a downtown street corner Sunday, but the mood was anything but hostile.

"We've talked to each other, and we've all agreed to have a difference of opinion," said veteran Rick Miles, who supports a U.S. attack on Iraq. "We're glad they're here exercising their free speech rights, but they wouldn't have those rights if we don't fight for them."

After months of seeing members of Peace Network of the Ozarks almost every weekend demonstrating against a possible war with Iraq, Miles decided it was time to share his feelings on the subject.

Sunday afternoon, he and a friend stood on one corner of the intersection with signs reading "Support our troops," and "Back the attack on Iraq." A few like-minded demonstrators joined the duo across the street from more than 40 anti-war demonstrators, nodding as passers-by waved.

Several of the peace demonstrators walked across the street to talk with Miles' group.

"We hope to stand beside other patriots with different views, and discuss our view," said Joan Collins, coordinator of Peace Network of the Ozarks. "You can't understand each other until you share your thoughts."

It's likely Collins and her group will get plenty of chances for that exchange. Miles said he plans to appear with is "Support our troops" signs every time the Peace Network holds a demonstration.
