Arts Council counts down to summer

A child-friendly Saturday Social will be from 1 to 3 p.m. May 3 at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St., in Cape Girardeau. The arts and crafts workshop will be led by Rosetta Whitten from Cateye Glasses ART Studio. She will use the return of summer as the inspiration for several projects, both in two dimensions and three dimensions. All materials for the workshop will be provided for free, and all ages are encouraged to attend. Those attending are asked to notify the Arts Council at 334-9233 in advance.

Learn to refashion vintage jewelry

Claire Bruce will lead a workshop on refashioning vintage costume jewelry into new creations at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Oscar Hirsch Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark Ave. Participants are asked to bring items that can be repurposed. Registration is required by calling 334-5379, extension 122, or going to capelibrary.org.

Wind symphony to perform new music

The Southeast Missouri Wind Symphony will present a concert titled "Northing Borrowed, Nothing Blue, Just Lots of New" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bedell Performance Hall on the River Campus. The concert will feature new music for winds and percussion. Tickets are $10. For more information, call 651-2265.

The nature photography of Paul Hennrich -- titled "Bugs, Beasts, & Beauty" -- will be at the art gallery at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center in Cape County Park North beginning Thursday. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Theater camp offered to children

"Midsummer Kids' Camp," a camp where children will learn acting techniques from theater professionals, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 16 to 21 at Jackson City Park. Organized by the Acting Out! local theater company, the children will learn through a shortened, revised version of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The show will be performed June 20 and 21. Children 8 through 12 years old may participate with a registration fee of $150. Yoga East presents workshop Saturday

Yoga East will present a workshop from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at its studio, 827 Broadway in Cape Girardeau. The workshop will explore the idea of "Being Love" through dance and movement, and the creation of a book to record participants' dreams and ideas. Museum, writers guild will co-host event

The Cape River Heritage Museum and the Heartland Writers Guild will co-host a coffee house, book-signing and open mic event at the museum, 538 Independence St., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 16 for writers and readers. The public is invited to attend by listening or participating.
