Event offers songs of Lewis and Clark era

On Tuesday, Mary Green Vickery will present a special lecture, "Songs Lewis and Clark May Have Sung," at the Red House Interpretive Center, located at 128 S. Main St. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Vickery will wear clothing from the Lewis and Clark era and sing the songs of the time. The event is free and open to the public.

Fine art show opening at Sikeston Depot Museum

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Bootheel Regional Art Guild will hold its 21st annual judged fine art show today through July 29 in the Depot Museum at 116 W. Malone Ave., Sikeston. All artists 18 years or older living within 100 miles of Sikeston are invited to participate. Artists may enter up to three paintings or three-dimensional works of art for one fee of $15. Art must be original, appropriately framed and wired for hanging. Art will be accepted at the Sikeston Depot today between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Then it will be judged and hung for display. On Sunday the guild will sponsor a reception at the depot for artists and their guests, beginning at 1 p.m. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. For more information contact Marilyn Schwaninger, committee chairman, at (573) 472-0627 or (573) 471-5199.

Acoustic Open Mic goes to Bollinger County

On May 21, the Traveling Acoustic Open Mic will play a show at Barks Plantation RV Park and Campground near Glenallen, Mo., in Bollinger County, featuring bluegrass group Juniper Wind. The show starts at 4 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. The open mic welcomes all musicians on acoustic instruments, from beginner to professional. There is no cover. Children's art workshops offered this summer

Arts council presents summer arts camps

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will offer several summer arts camps this year for local residents. In their 30th year, the camps will run from July 5 to 29 and offer sessions for students of all ages, from infant to adult. Prices for the workshops vary. Art from the workshops will be displayed in the arts council's Lorimier Gallery Aug. 5 to 27. For more information, call the arts council at 334-9233.

Students to apprentice on Broadway project

Southeast Missouri State University theater students Stephen Fister and Andrew Tebo, both of whom recently appeared in the university's production of "Guys and Dolls," have been chosen to participate as apprentices in this summer's Broadway Theatre Project. The two were among only 150 students chosen throughout the country. The students will have a chance to work with Tony Award-winning Broadway choreographers and performers like Ann Reinking and Ben Vereen. The Broadway Theatre Project will be held July 10 to 31 on the campus of the University of South Florida.

Tunes at Twilight begins May 20 at Capaha Park

The first concert in the Tunes at Twilight series will be held May 20 at 7 p.m. at Capaha Park. Other concerts will be held at the Common Pleas Courthouse gazebo. The concert will feature Keith Sykes, an Americana artist from Memphis who was formerly a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. All Tunes at Twilight concerts are free and open to the public. Young Writers workshop planned in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The seventh annual Young Writers Workshop is set for June 29 to July 2 at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. This four-day workshop offers high school sophomores, juniors and seniors the chance to explore their talents in poetry or prose writing. Students will hone their writing skills by participating in daily critique sessions and by attending panels, readings and craft discussions led by SIUC faculty and graduate students. Resident camp fee is $230 and includes three nights' lodging, all meals and materials. Commuter camp fee is $190 and includes lunch, dinner and materials. Camp enrollment is limited.
