The Seattle grunge-rock of the '90s will be coming to Scott City next weekend.

Bootheel Harley-Davidson, which has outdoor staging, is hosting Grammy-nominated alternative rockers Candlebox on Sept. 7. Candlebox rose to prominence in 1993 with hits "Far Behind" and "You." The group has released five studio albums since, with all achieving multiplatinum or gold certification. They have also had 10 songs make the top 20 on U.S. charts. In April, Candlebox released a new album, "Love Stories and Other Musings." Produced by Ken Andrews (who has also worked with Pete Yorn, A Perfect Circle, Tenacious D and Beck), "Love Stories & Other Musings" has nine new songs and rerecordings of some of the band's '90s hits.

Bootheel Harley-Davidson marketing director Jason Butler said booking this show was one piece of a bigger puzzle.

"When we decided to do a big show like this, we looked for an act that would be new and exciting to the area. Candlebox fit perfectly, and we went for it," Butler said. "In our plan to continually bring in more and more shows, we want this to be the first step."

Those thinking this won't be the same band they heard in the past might be surprised to find that the founding members still lead the band. Members are lead singer and guitarist Kevin Martin, lead guitarist Peter Klett and drummer Scott Mercado, along with recent additions bassist Adam Kury and guitarist Sean Hennesy. Over the band's 20 years, Candlebox has toured or played shows with The Flaming Lips, Rush, Henry Rollins, Aerosmith, Godsmack, Metallica, Radiohead and The Offspring, among others. The band has also been on "The Late Show with David Letterman" several times.

Local acts Headley Grange and Bone Kings will open the show. Headley Grange, which will kick off the night, is a four-piece rock and blues band from Cape Girardeau. The group's influences include everything from classic rock and blues to new age progressive rock. The Bone Kings are a Scott City group with a 1980s "hair band" style, blending covers of classic hits with originals. Bone Kings member and promoter Timexx Seabaugh said bigger shows like this can help expose local acts to a national audience.

"When the bands around our music scene get to play in front of a big crowd and a big band, it can only be good for the rest of the scene," Seabaugh said. "You never know; the next big band could be right here in our area already, and this is the sort of thing that can propel them into the bigger spotlight."

Butler said tickets are currently selling at a brisk pace, and the show may sell out soon.

"We've received ticket orders from Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois, Tennessee and all over the area. This is definitely bigger than your normal local show; it's a regional show," Butler said. "That's great because we have plans to do more big shows that people want, and if folks come out and show their support we will be able to do that."

Tickets for the concert are $15 and can be purchased in person at Bootheel Harley-Davidson or online at bootheelhd.com. Gates open at 5 p.m., with music beginning an hour later. Butler said a limited number will be available at the gate the day of the show if it hasn't sold out. Lawn chairs will be permitted, but no outside coolers, beverages or food is allowed.
