Circus coming to Oran on Monday

The Culpepper & Merriweather Great Combined Circus will perform two shows on Monday at the Tilles Memorial City Park in Oran, Mo. The first will begin at 5 p.m., and the second will begin at 7:30 p.m. Neal E. Boyd, recording artist and winner of the 2008 "America's Got Talent," will perform the national anthem at both performances. Tickets can be purchased in advance at $6 for children and $9 for adults. They are available at Oran City Hall, Oran Alliance Bank, Oran Kwik Stop, Eftink Hardware, Morley Building Supply, Chaffee Food Giant, Ratattulie's Restaurant in Benton, Mo., and Advance Town & Country. No advance tickets will be sold on the day of the shows. They will be available at the gate for $7 for children and $12 for adults. Proceeds from the event will be used by the local Optimist for youth projects.

Program presented during women's celebration

Dr. Jane Stephens, provost emeritus of Southeast Missouri State University, will present a program titled "Women's Changing Expectations: From Abigail to Hillary" during a Women's History Celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Cape Girardeau River Heritage Museum.

Annual Illinois Indian artifact show to be Saturday

Members of the Illinois State Archeological Society will be hosting their third annual Indian Artifact Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex, north of Sparta, Ill., off of Highway 4. Admission to the event is free, and its members encourage everybody in the community to come out and learn more about the local prehistoric past. Writers guild hosts Aaron Picar visit

The Heartland Writers Guild will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Steck House, next door to First Presbyterian Church, 206 E. Washington St., Jackson. Guest speaker will be Aaron Picar, writer/teacher and musician/artist whose debut album, "Rise Together," garnered acclaim from award-winning musicians and industry insiders. Picar will share the art of songwriting with the guild. Those interested may visit. Sensational Smiles Fundraiser set for Saturday

The Crowe Gallery, 13 S. Spanish St., will be hosting the third annual Sensational Smiles Fundraiser from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15 per person, $25 per couple and $20 per person at the door. There will be music, wine, beer, hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, a silent auction and volunteer recognition. Tickets are available at Ruopp & Ruopp Dentistry, 1818 Broadway, and at innovative Orthodontics LLC, 2103 Broadway. All proceeds will support dental treatment scholarships for financially disadvantaged youths with urgent dental needs.

Kiwanis holding rock 'n roll dance

The Kiwanis Club of Cape Girardeau presents its annual '50s and '60s rock and roll dance. The event will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the A.C. Brase Arena Building. Bruce "Hey Baby" Channel will headline the show, performing some of the hits he's written such as "Hey Baby," "Standup" and "Party Time." Also featured will be Kim Keele-Jasinski and Fred Horrell. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed and for the dance contest. Setups will be available and coolers are permitted. Tickets are $10 per person in advance and $11 at the door. They are available at Shivelbine's, Cape Carpet, Adkisson Insurance Agency, Wm. Nobbe-John Deere, Tanksley Lawn and Landscaping, Van Matre Buick or any Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club member. Mission founder to give presentation at St. Paul

Steve Cohen, founder of The Apple of His Eye Mission Society in St. Louis, will present "I Am Not Ashamed of the Gospel" at 7:45 a.m., 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. April 15 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson.
