There is something about a plantation-style home that is restful, even if it is not in reality set on a southern plantation. The style itself has grace and dignity. The wide front porch and upstairs veranda invite the sway of a magnolia-scented Southern breeze, even in Cape Girardeau.

The home at 2543 Bridle Path in the Randol Farms Subdivision is the perfect example of Southern hospitality brought just a tad north.

Its sweeping green lawn gives this home the perfect setting. Inside, the home is filled with classic architectural features that give this home Southern charm combined with modern convenience. Beautiful hardwood door frames and crown molding are found throughout the house.

To the right of the home's entrance is the formal dining room. Hardwood floors stretch through most of the house, tying the rooms together visually. The dining room has a unique inlay of white oak and Brazilian cherry. Two floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the room in natural light, and a classic antique brass chandelier adds an elegant touch as it hangs from a ceiling medallion.

To the left of the entrance is the formal living room, also with hardwood floors and large windows. The family room stretches ahead, its centerpiece an antique mahogany fireplace mantle with a French tile facing. French doors lead to a deck which overlooks the roomy back yard.

The informal dining area is centered by a large bay window. Adjoining it is the kitchen, open and inviting, with custom-made English-styled cherry cabinetry. The plentiful shelf space along with several glass-fronted cabinets offers top-billing space for favorite pieces. A long kitchen island offers the perfect spot for after-school snacks and memorable conversation. The backsplash tile throughout much of the kitchen is an antique tin created in Nevada, Mo., one of only two locations where it is made. Its copper color gives the kitchen distinctive character and warmth. The kitchen range is gas, with a built-in oven below. The backsplash behind the range is French tile. Each of the appliances, including the side-by-side refrigerator with in-door drink and ice dispenser, is modern black, offering a wonderful contrast to the classic cabinetry.

The nearby mudroom has an exit to the two-car garage, and plentiful cubbies to organize the children's backpacks, lunch boxes and other school and play supplies. Also nearby is the main-level laundry room, with additional hooks for jackets and backpacks. Pocket doors enable the room to be visually separated from the kitchen. A large pantry also features pocket doors. A main-level half-bath offers convenience with its central location to the kitchen and other family areas.

Up the antique staircase are four of the home's five bedrooms. Also at the top of the stairs is a landing with an exit to the upstairs veranda, lined attractively with black wrought iron. Each of the upstairs bedrooms has its own individual character. A bathroom is centrally located to the bedrooms.

This home also has a finished basement with an antique oak and hard pine staircase. Beaded oak wall paneling gives the downstairs family room warm distinction. An antique bar is a focal point, with the ceiling above done in antique tin. French doors open to the patio beneath the deck.

Also downstairs is a large bedroom and what is currently being used as a playroom and exercise room.
